The US State Department Friday expressed its “deep concern” over escalation of violence in occupied East Jerusalem and condemned hate speech by extremist Jewish groups who rampaged through the city and chanted anti-Arab slogans.
“We are deeply concerned by the escalation of violence in Jerusalem. The rhetoric of extremist protestors chanting hateful and violent slogans must be firmly rejected. We call for calm and unity, and urge authorities to ensure the safety, security, and rights of all in Jerusalem,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a tweet.
It came after far-right Israeli settlers marched in Old Jerusalem, harassed Palestinians and chanted “death to Arabs”, triggering clashes in which more than 100 Palestinians were injured, about two dozen were hospitalized.
