University of Jordan UJ- Aqaba President Ghaleb Abbasi and Head of Environment, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Reduction at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Nidal Oran on Tuesday discussed ways and means to protect the coastal and marine environment in Aqaba.

The two officials also went over the university’s role in protecting and developing natural resources to serve the local community and boost economic growth.

Abbasi stressed the importance of closer cooperation in research projects aimed at developing local communities, in which, he said, the university played a key role in southern Jordan.

“The idea behind a Jordanian-Egyptian project in Aqaba, funded by Global Funds for Coral Reefs, is to provide financing for the private sector to involve it in the development of activities based on the green and blue economies,” he added.

For his part, Oran praised the university’s and the Marine Science Station’s role and progress in protecting the marine environment.

He pointed to national and sectoral priorities in promoting climate change concepts and environment-friendly sustainable solutions and contribution to a shared global vision to make the planet healthy and prosperous, stressing urgent and quick global action to protect the planet’s environment.
