Prime Minister Bishr Khasawneh inaugurated the Tariq passenger terminal for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project on Thursday, marking the start of the trial operation of the second lane of the project’s first phase, which spans 17.5 kilometers.
The second lane of the first phase begins at the Sweileh passenger station, passes through the Sports City Interchange station (where lanes 1 + 2 converge with a length of 7 km), and then continues to the Tareq passenger terminal via Al-Shaheed Street and ends at the Al Marbat bridge stop (a temporary stop until the construction of the permanent station is completed) across Prince Hamzah and Istiklal Streets.
The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the project to improve services, particularly public transport services, as public transport is one of the development levers and has a direct impact on enhancing the quality of life and meeting the rising demand for services.
He asserted that the BRT is expected to reduce traffic congestion and strengthen the public transportation network, highlighting the fact that the government places a high priority on boosting public trust in transportation services.
By launching the trial run of the second lane, the Amman Municipality will have completed the first phase of the BRT for the two lanes, which has a total length of 27.5 kilometers and a total cost of JD127.4 million, including the construction of intersections and stations along the two lanes.
Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh of Amman stated that the BRT is the city’s first safe and sustainable mass transportation system, and that it fulfills the Municipality’s 2022-2026 strategy regarding transportation, traffic solutions, and infrastructure, highlighting that the project utilizes environmentally friendly buses that operate at regular intervals.
Shawarbeh indicated that 24 buses will operate on the second lane of the BRT with a 5-minute interval between each trip, indicating that this project is not only a passenger station but a strategic public transportation project
