Media Minister receives Egyptian delegation

State Minister for Media Affairs and official government spokesman Faisal Shboul Monday called for an Arab coalition to counter “the danger” of social media, which has taken over advertising from media outlets that are worthy of that role.

He told a visiting Egyptian media delegation of the importance of an initiative by five Arab countries to work out a new strategy with global companies to deal with social media, adding that the Arab States Broadcasting Union will prepare a technical report in that respect that will be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the Council of Arab Information Ministers.

Media outlets have a chance to reclaim their role and influence through refuting rumor and false news posted on social media platforms, Shboul stressed.

The minister pointed to the historically solid Jordanian-Egyptian relations, commending Egyptian media in this regard and noting that the two countries see eye to eye on various regional issues.

He also outlined Jordan’s firm position on the Palestinian issue and the importance of the Kingdom’s custodianship over Islamic and Muslim holy shrines in Jerusalem and its support of various Arab causes.

He also told the delegation of the external and internal challenges posed to Jordan, foremost of which is protecting its northern and eastern borders from smuggling and drug trafficking.
