Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Tuesday emphasized the importance of achieving the objectives set out in the 2030 comprehensive strategy, by reaching a 50 percent contribution of renewable energy in electricity generation.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), Kharabsheh said that the trend towards green energy is a strategic choice for Jordan to increase renewable energy sources’ contribution to the total energy mix.

“Jordan has built significant partnerships with top-ranked countries in renewable energy, like Germany, which could pave the way for better production of sustainable energy by making use of their experience,” he added, noting that some countries managed to address the energy storage issue, which is the biggest challenge faced by the renewable energy sector.

As for the transmission and distribution networks, the minister indicated that building smart networks will enhance the ability of grids to absorb more renewable power generation, while electricity interconnections with neighboring countries will contribute to boosting the stability of the electric network.

Other local energy sources are also part of the ministry’s concern, he said, as work is in progress to drill three new wells in the Hamza oil field, while two other wells will be re-entered to identify new drilling sites and reserves, in addition to oil and gas exploration in new areas.

As part of structuring the energy sector and enhancing its global competitiveness, a study is currently underway to establish a natural gas company to be accountable for natural gas contracts, while two new oil derivatives marketing companies will be licensed, the minister announced.
