Jordan and the European Union on Wednesday co-chaired the 5th ministerial meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) on employment and work, hosted by Morocco.

Jordan’s representative, Minister of Labor Nayef Istitieh, said that the 2-day ministerial meeting focused on employment and employability of the most vulnerable, especially among youth and women.

“The ministers emphasized on sharing best practices of economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, and discussed the most pressing labor market challenges in the Euro-Mediterranean region,” he said.

Istitieh indicated that finding employment opportunities in light of the persisting negative effects of COVID-19 has become a major challenge not only for Jordan, but for all countries of the southern Mediterranean. “This calls for redoubled efforts in coordination between the two sides of the Mediterranean to reduce unemployment rates, with a focus on vocational training and lifelong learning,” he added.

On the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, the minister held separate meetings with a number of Arab and European labor ministers, as well as representatives of international organizations, and discussed Jordan’s need to develop its vocational and technical training system, increase job opportunities and promote the integration of women into the labor market.
