Iran announces construction of new nuclear plant

Amman, Iran on Saturday began construction on a new nuclear power plant in the country’s southwest.

The plant will be located in Iran’s oil-rich Khuzestan province, near its western border with Iraq, according to the Washington Post.

“Developing phase 1 of the nuclear power plant in Khuzestan province started by leveraging local energy,” Mohammed Eslami, head of Iran’s civilian Atomic Energy Organization, told journalists at the construction site’s inauguration ceremony.

Eslami added that phase 1 has been stalled for many years as foreigners failed to fulfill their commitments.
