Finance ministry submits new General Sales Tax Law to Cabinet

Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD) has completed a draft law amending the General Sales Tax Law for 2021.

The draft law, which was submitted by the Ministry of Finance to the Prime Ministry, aims, through its mandating reasons, to harmonize with international practices in the concept of levying sales tax on goods and services by approving the principle of supply, which addresses issues pertaining to sale or ownership transfer, or service delivery.

The draft law, a copy of which was obtained by “Petra”, eyes to contribute to reducing tax evasion and avoidance by bridging the loopholes that some taxpayers may resort to, and addressing the problem of delays in disbursing sales tax refunds.

The new bill merges in its articles the 1994 General Sales Tax Law No. (6), which shall come into force as of the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
