The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) launched a regional initiative aimed at reducing inequities in the Arab world by providing work possibilities for young people, enhancing their skills, and facilitating their job training.
The “Josour” initiative was launched at the first Arab Forum for Equality, which took place over two days in Amman.
Rola Dashti, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCWA, said the initiative brings together those who present possibilities with those who have the potential to innovate for societal development, and it will be implemented in every Arab country.
She urged the business sector to provide opportunities for young people, train them, and invest in their potential, ideas, and talents in order to bridge societal gaps.
The First Arab Forum for Equality, in its final statement, urged for the establishment of comprehensive social safety systems, improved school quality and retention rates, more affordable housing, gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the inclusion of individuals with disabilities.
It also advocated the formulation of social and economic development strategies based on collaboration between state institutions, the business sector, and civil society in order to combat corruption, improve transparency, and develop rules and regulations that are responsive to changing societal requirements.
The Forum also called for the adoption of policies that would increase access to education, work, and social security for individuals with disabilities, women, and residents of remote areas, as well as their participation in decision-making.
