The National Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases Centre said that its cadres are following up on information circulated on a number of international media outlets about detecting possible infection of monkeypox among humans in several European countries, Canada and Australia.

In a statement on Friday, the center said that it is closely monitoring with the global epidemiological and scientific research centers and in close coordination with national and regional institutions, as well as the World Health Organization for follow-up, monitoring and early detection of any possible infections.

Monkeypox is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus.

It is an endemic disease in Africa and was discovered in 1985.
