Environment minister meets with ESCWA executive secretary

Environment Minister, Nabil Masarweh, and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rola Dashti, discussed key pillars of the initiative to swap debts from the Kingdom’s budget within projects that guarantee response to climate changes and to achieve the specific contributions that Jordan has committed to under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed using climate change diplomacy as a strategic means for Jordan to reduce or write off part of the public debt, through a trilateral agreement between the lender, the facilitator and the borrowing country, within projects eligible to achieve climate contributions.

Masarweh said that Jordan has translated the nationally determined contributions into implementation projects in key sectors, and a list of priority projects, costs and results studies, in addition to implementation plans for green growth in the various sectors (energy / transport / agriculture / water / tourism / waste management / health) has been prepared, to be the starting point for climate funders.

He added that these projects won the support of the political will of the Prime Minister, who called on concerned authorities to include them in their development plans.
