Jordan, Georgia talk defence, military cooperation

Amman, The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Major General Yousef Huneiti, and the Georgian Minister of Defense, Juansher Burchuladze, and Wednesday held a meeting in Amman military cooperation.

Huneiti and Burchuladze discussed furthering cooperation in defence and discussed regional and international developments.

Huneiti said: “The Jordanian-Georgian relations constitute a model in facing various challenges and difficulties. Cooperation continues with the Georgian armed forces in all military fields by leveraging mutual expertise and capabilities.”

In turn, Burchuladze noted the “depth” of the relations between Jordan and Georgia, praising the “pivotal” role played by Jordan in combating terrorism and extremism and consolidating regional security and stability.

EU diplomatic missions visit northern military region

Amman, A delegation of EU ambassadors and military attaches visited Wednesday the northern military region.

The delegates listened to a briefing by the Commander of Border Guard Brigade 2 on the tasks carried out by soldiers in the northern military region, following which they praised the Armed Forces.

Criminal investigation police warn of job scams

The Public Security Criminal Investigation Department Tuesday warned against dealing with fake companies that defraud people by claiming to secure jobs for money.

The department called on job-seekers to verify the licenses and papers of agencies or commercial companies they deal with, noting that it had addressed complaints by people who were defrauded by an unlicensed recruitment agency that charged them money for employment.

It said those involved were arrested and an investigation with them began.

Life sentence for drug dealer who attempted to smuggle 4,100kg of cocaine

In an unprecedented case compared to its records, the State Security Court sentenced a drug dealer to life imprisonment and a JD20,000 fine after convicting him and his partner of importing 4,100 kilograms of cocaine.

In an open session held Tuesday, the court gave his partner a 10-year jail term and a fine of JD20,000.

The court sentenced the first defendant with the harsher verdict due to his criminal record of drug trafficking. It had previously awarded him five years of prison and a JD5,000 fine.

In 2021, the two convicts were arrested while attempting to import cocaine in mini fridges from a neighboring country via a shipping company. The Anti-Narcotics Department then tracked the shipment and confiscated 4,100 kilograms of cocaine.

Irbid rollover vehicle crash kills 1, injures 3

One person died and three others were injured after their vehicle rolled over on the Amman-Irbid highway late Monday.

A security source said Civil Defense Department staff administered first aid to the injured, and transferred them and the body to a nearby hospital.

“One of the injured was listed in serious condition,” the source added.

8 people missing as oil tanker explodes in Thailand

Eight workers have been missing and several homes were damaged after an oil tanker caught fire and exploded at a dockyard in central Thailand on Tuesday, local media reported.

According to the local Bangkok Post, the empty tanker was undergoing regular maintenance at Ruammitr Dockyard on the Mae Klong river, when it caught fire and exploded.

Officials from the Marine Department said the fire had been extinguished.

An official investigation into the incident has been launched, according to the newspaper.

Israeli forces kill 14-year-old Palestinian near Bethlehem

Ramallah, Israeli forces fatally shot a 14-year-old Palestinian during a dawn raid Monday of a refugee camp near Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

It said troops drove into Dheisheh refugee camp and carried out a search-and-arrest operation, triggering clashes with local residents during which soldiers fired live rounds, tear gas and stun grenades, seriously wounding Omar Lutfi Khamour, who later succumbed to his wounds.

The killing raised to 14 the Palestinian death toll from Israeli fire since the start of the year, including four children.

FM, US National Security Council coordinator talk ties, region

Amman, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi Monday discussed with US National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, Jordanian-US ties and efforts to resolve regional crises.

Safadi and McGurk noted the solid Jordanian-US partnership and the two countries’ interest in further cementing cooperation “to serve the common interests of the two countries.”

The Foreign Minister commended US aid to Jordan’s development process and help to face repercussions from regional crises, underscoring the importance of a memorandum of understanding that frames aid to the Kingdom, which was the longest and largest of four memoranda that have been signed by the two countries.

During the meeting, in which Amos Hochstein, Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs at the US State Department, took part, McGurk referred to the “historic” partnership with Jordan and the Kingdom’s stabilizing role in the region.

The meeting tackled a number of regional issues, including the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis, cooperation in combating terrorism and support for Iraq and Lebanon.

Safadi underlined Washington’s central and leading role in efforts to breathe new life into the Palestinian-Israeli peace process to solve the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution and in line with the international law and approved references.

He valued US support of the two-state solution, rejection of unilateral moves that undermine it and its reiteration of the importance of respecting the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and the holy sites there.

Safadi and McGurk agreed on the need to continue cooperation and coordination in efforts to resolve regional crises and enhance security, stability and development in the region.

Crown Prince inaugurates Deloitte’s Jordan Digital Centre in Amman

Amman, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II on Monday inaugurated Deloitte’s Jordan Digital Centre in Amman.

The centre will offer a range of technology solutions, including digital transformation, data and analytics, human capital, advertising, marketing and e-commerce, and client-specific solutions for public and private sector clients in the region.

Crown Prince Al Hussein said the centre advances Jordan as a regional and international ICT hub, and provides opportunities for young Jordanians to learn, build their capacities, and hone their skills.

For his part, Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Ahmad Hanandeh said opening the centre is in line with Jordan’s Economic Modernisation Vision, noting that the Kingdom is an attractive destination for investments in ICT, due to its well-equipped digital infrastructure, qualified human resources, and investment-friendly regulations.

CEO of Consulting at Deloitte Middle East Rashid Bashir said inaugurating an advanced digital centre in Jordan is an important step towards the progress of the business ecosystem in the region.

According to Bashir, the centre currently has 90 employees, with a plan to increase the number to 350 over the next years.

Jordan condemns deadly attack in Somalia

Amman, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Monday condemned a terrorist car bomb attack in Buloburde in the Central Somali region of Hiran, which left a number of people dead.

The Ministry reiterated Jordan’s solidarity with the “brotherly” government and people of Federal Somalia, and its rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism, expressing its condolences to the families of the victims.
