Scores of radical settlers storm Al-Aqsa Mosque

Dozens of Jewish extremist settlers, led by radical rabbi Yehuda Glick, on Tuesday stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque / Haram Al Sharif compound in occupied East Jerusalem.

A statement by the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf said that today’s raid by the radical settlers was carried out from Al- Magharebah Gate under heavy protection of Israeli police, who imposed strict restrictions on the entry of Muslim worshipers to Al-Aqsa, to secure the intruders’ incursions.

The settlers provocatively toured the Al-Aqsa yards and performed their Talmudic rites in front of the the Qubbat al-Sakhrah (Dome of the Rock) Mosque, before they left from Al-Silsila Gate.

This intrusion came ahead of the “flags march” to be organized by settler associations this evening in the old city of Jerusalem.

Israeli forces assault, arrest Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem

Israeli occupation forces Tuesday attacked Palestinians gathered at East Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate, one of the entrances to the Old City and the Haram Al-Sharif Compound, and arrested a number of them ahead of a march by Jewish extremists and settlers.

Eyewitnesses told Petra’s reporter in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah that police forces deployed in occupied East Jerusalem beat Palestinians with batons as they tried to clear them from Damascus Gate, a flashpoint of latest tensions.

Israel sent police and military reinforcements, and closed Palestinian-owned stores in the Old City of Jerusalem ahead of the so-called “flag march” by ultranationalist and extremist settlers.

Palestinian national and Islamic factions in the West Bank and Arabs in Israel proper called for standing against the provocative march in which thousands of right-wing Israelis and settlers were due to take part.

60K Covid-hit households to receive cash transfers Tuesday

The National Aid Fund (NAF), the government’s social assistance arm, started Tuesday the disbursement of cash transfers to about 60,000 families under Takaful 3, a national solidarity program that targets households hardest hit by the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.

NAF Director-General Omar Mashaqbeh told Petra that the 60,000 households were added to 100,000 families originally targeted by the scheme following a recent government decision to expand beneficiary access. The total number of beneficiary households now stands at 160,000.

He indicated that the 9-month cash assistance, which started in April, will run through the end of the current year, noting that today’s payment will be for the months of April and May.

According to Mashaqbeh, the cost of adding those 60,000 households to the scheme is estimated at JD50 million, brining the total cost of the program to JD150 million.

Israel presses with home demolitions, judaisation of occupied Jerusalem

The Israeli occupation municipality in East Jerusalem Tuesday handed notifications to Palestinians in the Arab neighborhood of Silwan to appear before its inspectors for not implementing 2018 orders to self-demolish their own homes.

Member of the Silwan committee to defend the land Fakhri Abu Diab warned in a statement that 17 homes will be demolished in the Al-Bustan neighborhood of Silwan, south of occupied Jerusalem, by the end of July.

He said that 98 homeowners had received demolition notices, including the 17 for immediate destruction, under a law that bars appeal in Israeli courts before the end of next month.

Diab called on the international community to help counter the occupation authority’s “vicious attack” on the neighborhood, and its attempt to tighten its control over Jerusalem.

Some 1,550 Palestinians live in Al-Bustan quarter in the centre of Silwan, which is adjacent to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

For the past years, the occupation authority has been trying to demolish hundreds of Arab-owned homes in Al-Bustan to turn it into a “biblical garden” as part of its Judaization scheme in Jerusalem.

Dozens of Palestinian families are also threatened with forced eviction from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, another East Jerusalem neighbourhood, which spurred an international outcry.

Jordan chairs UfM ministerial energy meeting

Jordan, in partnership with the European Union, Monday chaired the third ministerial meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) on energy, which was held via virtual technology in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

The meeting, chaired by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati on behalf of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries, discussed areas of joint cooperation between the UfM countries in the fields of natural gas, electricity, renewable energy and energy rationalization.

The one-day meeting issued the 2021 Ministerial Declaration, which includes a work program and mechanisms for joint cooperation during the upcoming period in the fields of renewable energy, energy rationalization, electricity and natural gas, as well as increasing cooperation between member states, especially the countries of the northern and southern Mediterranean basin.

In opening remarks, Zawati voiced hope that the Ministerial Declaration would be a major catalyst in strengthening cooperation between member states, stressing the importance of the declaration in the expansion of renewable energy and energy efficiency and strengthening cooperation in the exchange of electricity and the stable supply of natural gas throughout the northern and southern Mediterranean region.

“We hope that this announcement will help promote equitable and sustainable growth that will extend directly to the recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic, which imposed huge challenges on all sectors, including energy,” she stated.

The minister stressed the importance of the announcement in finding new ways for the required solutions to address environmental issues and climate change, calling on participants to speed up the legislative procedures and necessary measures to facilitate electrical interconnection between the countries of the Union.

“This move should facilitate the transition to sustainable energy in cooperation between the public and private sectors, investment and financing agencies, and harness the opportunities offered by research, development, innovation and digitization to move forward in improving safe, sustainable and energy efficiency energy production,” Zawati added.

She also voiced hope that the ministerial meeting and its discussions will contribute to achieving the desired goals of the Union for cooperation in the field of electricity, gas, renewable energy and energy efficiency, and for the benefit of all of the union nations, taking into account a fair balance of interests among members in the southern and northern regions of the Mediterranean.

Zawati pointed out that Jordan was, and still is, within its current role in the joint presidency, one of the countries that contribute and support all areas of cooperation between the countries of the UfM, and will continue its efforts to support the initiatives and programs drawn up by the Secretariat and adopted by the Union countries to boost opportunities for regional cooperation in energy and the gradual integration of energy markets.

“The Union is aware of the pressing energy challenges facing the Mediterranean region today, and the need to intensify regional cooperation in order to address them. The countries of the Union for the Mediterranean today reaffirmed their common goal and commitment to move forward in a just and sustainable transition towards low-emission, inclusive, efficient and resilient economies and societies,” UfM Secretary-General Nasser Kamel said.

Portugal’s Minister of Environment and Climate Action Joao Pedro Matos Fernandes stressed the importance of the meeting to tackle common challenges in the field of renewable energy and rationalization of energy consumption, joining forces to reduce carbon emissions and strengthening the commitment to accelerate the necessary changes towards more sustainable and efficient economies and societies.
