Biden uses Gaza ceasefire to reiterate backing of two-state solution

US President Joe Biden stressed Friday that a two-state solution, a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel, is the only answer to the violence and to solve the conflict.

He also told a White House press conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in that there is no shift in his commitment to the security of Israel, but reiterated his support for the two-state solution.

Speaking hours after a ceasefire went into force ending 11 days of deadly Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and Hamas-fired rockets on Israeli towns, the American president pledged to work with the international community to provide financial aid to rebuild the homes destroyed in the Israeli bombing of Gaza.

The violence was sparked by Israeli police attacks on worshippers in occupied East Jerusalem and an Israeli court order to evict dozens of Palestinian families from their homes in the Arab neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Biden said that Palestinians in Jerusalem must be respected and humanitarian aid must be delivered to Gaza as part of the ceasefire agreement.
