Education ministry’s OpenEMIS technical support project launched

Amman: Minister of Education, Azmi Mahafazah, Ambassador of the European Union to Jordan, Maria Hadjitheodosiou, and UNESCO Representative to Jordan, Min Jeong Kim on Wednesday launched the technical support project for the ministry’s Open-Source Education Management Information System (OpenEMIS) to promote evidence-based decision-making.

Through a contribution of €1 million provided by European Union, Ministry of Education, EU and UNESCO joined forces to support implementation of OpenEMIS policy launched last June. This partnership focuses on developing OpenEMIS to improve data quality, accuracy and use, including figures on refugees, according to a ministry statement.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mahafazah lauded the ministry’s “high” partnership level with EU and UNESCO, valuing constant support to the ministry , which contributes to developing Jordan’s educational process.

He also pointed to the need to build user capacities of OpenEMIS system at the school, educational directorates and ministry to employ data in the decision-making process.

On its goals, he noted the system provides online technical support to address problems and observations that are being monitored on its services.

Mahafazah highlighted the ministry’s keenness to build capabilities of the ministry’s staff to maintain and run the system services, as well as supporting and developing tools to enter, update and check data to serve decision-makers at all administrative levels.

The ministry’s plan, he noted, aims to include all the Kingdom’s schools, which reach about 7,400.

This newly-launched system is operated on cloud computing to ensure “efficient” performance, “speedy” access and integration with e-government services, he said.

Malaysia contributes to UNRWA schools in Jordan

Amman: The Embassy of Malaysia in Amman, representing the Government and People of Malaysia, contributed stationaries and cleaning supplies for more than 6,300 Palestinian refugee students enrolled in nine UNRWA schools under UNWRA Jordan.

The donation signing ceremony, held at UNRWA’s Nuzha Girls School, was attended by the Ambassador of Malaysia to Jordan, Mohamad Nasri Abdul Rahman, Acting Director of UNRWA Affairs at the Jordan Field Office, Olaf Becker, and officials from the Embassy of Malaysia and UNRWA.

The Ambassador stated that the contribution was from Malaysia’s Humanitarian Trust Fund for People of Palestine, which was established in 2002, adding that Malaysia continues to provide undivided support and solidarity for Palestinians.

During the event, Becker briefed the attendees on UNRWA’s operations in Jordan, which include providing humanitarian services in education, healthcare, relief, social services, infrastructure development, and emergency response towards more than 2.3 million registered Palestinian refugees living in Jordan.

UNRWA, whose operations rely heavily on donations, stated its appreciation of the contribution by the Government and People of Malaysia. They said the contribution will support the schools to provide continuous education for refugee students.

UK Minister for Development visits Jordan, announces new development tools to support Jordan

Amman: UK Minister for Development, Andrew Mitchell, on Wednesday began a visit to Jordan, during which he is scheduled to meet with a number of senior Jordanian officials and announce new development tools to support the Kingdom.

In a statement, British Embassy in Amman said Mitchell is visiting Jordan to see UK aid to Jordan, including to help vulnerable Jordanians and Syrian refugees, and discuss development cooperation with the Jordanian government as part of the close partnership between the two countries.

During his visit, the minister will highlight the UK’s commitment to a long-term partnership to support Jordan’s economic, social and political resilience and to help the Jordanian government in its economic and political reform agenda.

Mitchell is also scheduled to hold talks with Jordan’s government to discuss the UK’s development support to Jordan and how further to develop sustainable approaches to delivering services to refugees and Jordanians.

During high level discussions with international partners and the government of Jordan, the minister will welcome Jordan’s Economic Vision 2033 and public sector modernisation plans and government’s achievements in maintaining macroeconomic stability and discussed UK support for implementation of reforms to deliver growth and jobs.

The minister also will discuss shared efforts to strengthen gender equality and women’s participation in Jordan, particularly in the economy. At a signing ceremony on Wednesday, he will announce additional UK support to delivering Jordan’s National Action Plan on Women Peace and Security (JONAP).

The minister said: “Jordan is a close and valued partner of the UK. The UK stands by Jordan and we are committed to a long-term partnership to support Jordan in its vital regional role, including as a host of refugees. We are working with Jordan to support progress in structural reforms to promote investment and exports to deliver economic growth and create jobs.”

During a visit to the Zaatari Camp for Refugees the minister saw first-hand humanitarian programmes in support of Syrian refugees and heard from them on how UK support is helping them.

He said “Over a decade after the Syria crisis I have been moved by Jordan’s generosity hosting refugees and to see how sustained UK aid provides life-saving assistance to refugees here at Zaatari camp and throughout Jordan. I am proud that UK funding has helped support over 51 thousand families meet their basic needs such as food, shelter and education since the beginning of the crisis. We will continue to support vulnerable people in Jordan.”

The minister will also attend a breakfast with Jordanian tech entrepreneurs, to highlight the country’s potential in this sector and the central importance of business in driving growth and jobs creation. In the week marking one year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Minister will highlight the UK’s work to address the global negative impacts of Russia’s invasion, including on food security.

During his two day visit, Mitchell will announce a package of technical support on Jordan’s macroeconomic stability and sign a MoU for £0.4m through the pooled funding mechanism to UN Women on phase two of Jordan’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.

Since 2019 the UK has provided £37m to the World Food Programme and £35m to UNHCR to directly support vulnerable refugees in Jordan, inside and outside camps.
