Jordan sends aid convoy to Syria

In implementation of royal directives to help victims of earthquakes in Syria and Turkiye, Jordan sent earlier on Tuesday a seven-truck convoy loaded with relief supplies to affected areas in Syria, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.

Ministry spokesperson Sinan Majali said in a statement that the operation was coordinated with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization, adding that the United Nations agencies who are operating in Syria will receive the convoy.

The Foreign Minister of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, and the Jordanian Army chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the General Intelligence Department (GID) director Tuesday landed in Kigali, Rwanda, to participate in the strategic dialogue on cooperation.

Safadi, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Major General Yousef Huneiti, and the GID Director, Major General Ahmad Hosni, laid wreaths at the Genocide Memorial in Kigali before a meeting with Rwanda Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta.

Safadi said in press statements after a tour of the monument that documents the genocide in an area where about 250,000 of its victims were buried, “This monument stands as a sad reminder of the evil generated by hatred, ignorance and racial discrimination in Rwanda, which, today, presents with what it had achieved in renaissance and growth a model for what respect for the other, justice and compassion result in goodness and prosperity.”

Minister underscores youth’s role in decision-making

Minister of Social Development Wafa Bani Mustafa said youth have a key role in various public and political decisions and political parties.

During her meeting with young people participating in the King Abdullah II Fund for Development’s (KAFD) Parliament Fellowship Project, Bani Mustafa said the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System has attached paramount importance to activating youth participation as per the constitution.

Pointing to recently-passed legislation regulating partisan activities by university students, she cited Article (8) of the law that commits the Higher Education Ministry to forming student councils, associations, unions or alumni and allowing all students, who are affiliated to political parties or not, to exercise their right to run or vote in any of them.

KAFD’s CEO Mazen Tabbalat said that KAFD provides various practical programs for young people, particularly those focused on political empowerment, and acquainting them with the Lower House of Parliament’s legislative and oversight role.

Through the Parliament Fellowship Project, he said, participants receive training on the mechanism of formulating policy papers, political reporting and professional legal and political research writing. He added that the 6-month practical training stage began at the Lower House at the start of its ordinary session, which includes panel discussions and workshops between participants and government entities to educate trainees on the decision-making process.

Jordan amongst first to implement De-Institutionalisation for disabled: Minister

Minister of Social Development (MoSD) Wafaa Bani Mustafa Tuesday said Jordan was amongst the first Arab countries to implement DeIindtitutionalisation (De-I) for persons with disabilities and undertake the process of community-based care.

During the opening of the Al-Amal Centre for Special Education in Salt, Al-Salt Islamic Charity Association, Bani Mustafa said, “The Ministry [of Social Development] is now in the process of reviewing all regulating legislation in this regard, including the De-Institutionalisation bylaw, so that we can provide this dear group with all services in the best way.”

She noted that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2017 was part of implementing the Ministry’s strategy regarding De-I and encouraging the construction and development of inclusive, community day-care centres to break the isolation of persons with disabilities.

The head of the Al-Salt Islamic Charity Association, Muhammad Shomali, talked about said the Association serves 1,700 male and female students and employs about 170 employees, noting that its ultimate goal is to serve the local community, create educational leaders and focus on promoting distinguished and creative students.

Israeli troops raid Jenin and arrest 27 in West Bank

Israeli troops staged a dawn raid Tuesday into the city of Jenin and the nearby camp north of the occupied West Bank and arrested 27 Palestinians in sweeps across other Palestinian cities.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said special forces in military jeeps sneaked into Jenin, sparking clashes with local youth during which the army used live rounds, rubber bullets and tear gas injuring a number of people. It said shots and home-made bombs were fired on soldiers but no injuries were reported among them.

It said the army deployed sharpshooters on rooftops and confiscated a vehicle.

Meanwhile, the occupation army staged search-and-arrest raids in various parts of the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem and arrested 27 people.
