Palestinian FM warns against far-right Israeli government’s settlement plans

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry warned on Monday that Israeli Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition agreement with far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir is a broad invitation to escalating violence in the conflict.

In a press release, the ministry condemned Israeli media reports that the incoming Netanyahu government has put in place a plan to start construction of 9,000 settlement units in Qalandia outside occupied East Jerusalem, entirely isolate Jerusalem from its surroundings in the north and linking it to Israel proper.

It denounced statements by coalition leaders to allow Jewish settlers more access to pray inside Al-Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif compound, give more powers to use live fire against Palestinians and legalize dozens of settlement outposts to turn settlements across the occupied West Bank into a huge geographically contiguous block.

The Palestinian ministry held Netanyahu fully responsible for “this extremist and racist policy” and the policies of his partners in the far-right coalition government.

It vowed to resist the coalition’s plans and uphold legitimate Palestinian rights, adding that it will pursue diplomacy on the international legal track to expose the racist colonial strategy of the new government.

The ministry said it will continue to work for the State of Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations and work with the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice to end “this prolonged occupation and to Israel’s impunity as the occupying power from accountability.”

Senate Head, Yemen Presidential Council team discuss ties

Senate President Faisal Fayez met on Monday with Chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Rashad Al-Alimi and an accompanying delegation.

Jordan, he added, underlines a political solution to the Yemeni crisis based on the Gulf Initiative, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, rejects Iranian interference in Yemen’s affairs and calls for adhering to the truce, especially opening roads and safe passages to Taiz.

Jordan partakes in EUMedRail’s final conference

Jordan participated in the final conference of the EUMedRail project, which was recently held in Brussels, Belgium.

The event brought together 16 high-level officials and experts from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Palestine, as well as representatives from the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), the EU Agency for Railways (ERA), the European Commission, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), and the Intergovernmental Organization for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF), according to the EU’s website.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport on Monday, the Jordanian delegation presented details of the first phase of the National Railway Project, which will connect Aqaba to Amman.

The delegation noted a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the Hedjaz Jordan Railway in accordance with the ministry’s 2022-2027 public transportation strategy.

Area of licensed buildings up 3.9pct in Jan-Sep of 2022

The total area of buildings licensed in the January-September period of 2022 edged up by 3.9 percent to 6.538 million square meters (sqm) against 6.292 million sqm in the same period of 2021, according to official figures.

The Department of Statistics (DoS) said Monday that the number of new building licenses issued in the first nine months of the year declined by 4.1 percent to a total of 18,938 licenses, compared with 19,742 licenses in the same period of last year.

Similarly, the area of buildings licensed for residential purposes decreased by 1.5 percent, to 5.435 million sqm, against 5.518 million sqm during the same period last year, the figures showed.

As for buildings licensed for non-residential purposes, their area jumped to about 1.103 million sqm, up by a whopping 42.5 percent, compared to about 774,000 sqm for the same period last year, according to the figures.

Buildings licensed for residential purposes accounted for 83.1 percent of the total area of certified buildings, leaving 16.9 percent for buildings used for non-residential purposes, according to the DoS.

In its geographic breakdown of the data, the department said that the Kingdom’s central region accounted for 65.5 percent of the total area of licensed buildings, followed by the northern and southern regions at 25.1 and 9.4 percent, respectively.
