Individuals and organizations will take action to address society’s most critical issues by empowering ethics

New York, July 27, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The ninth annual Global Ethics Day, an initiative of Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, will be celebrated on October 19, 2022. The theme is “Ethics Empowered.”

In an increasingly polarized world, ethics can be used to improve our daily lives, strengthen communities, and address some of society’s most pressing challenges such as climate change, the global refugee crisis, attacks on democracy, inequality, and more.

On #GlobalEthicsDay, Carnegie Council invites citizens, businesses, professional organizations, schools, governments, and nonprofits from across the world to demonstrate their commitment to using ethics as a force for good. Activities may include debates, panels, social media campaigns, exhibits, videos, pop-up events, and so much more.

Internet Society Foundation Announces US$1.5 million in funding to promote Internet resiliency

RESTON, Va., July 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Internet Society Foundation has launched a second round of grants through its Resiliency program, which aims to help communities enhance preparedness and build Internet resiliency when faced with adverse events. This funding will support projects that increase network resiliency in communities prone to natural and climate-related disasters, ensuring these communities are better able to prepare for and withstand the effects of a disaster on Internet connectivity. A resilient Internet connection is one that maintains an acceptable level of service in the face of faults and challenges to normal operation.

“Connectivity to the Internet becomes a vital tool when disaster strikes, both for people in need and those responding to the emergency,” noted Sarah Armstrong, Executive Director of the Internet Society Foundation. “Through these grants, we aim to support communities to reduce vulnerabilities and build the capacity and resilience to navigate future emergencies.”

Examples of the types of projects the Foundation will support include: supporting development of temporary networks for crisis response, protecting data centers and Internet exchange points (IXPs) against environmental threats, fortifying sub-sea cables and/or stations, and supporting Internet service providers (ISPs) to upgrade infrastructure.

Organizations currently implementing projects around the world through the Resiliency grant program include Help.NGO, NetHope, Inc., and Télécoms Sans Frontières.

The Resiliency program will open for applications between 25 July and 19 August. Grants of up to US$500,000 will be awarded for projects lasting up to 12 months.

CGTN: China, Indonesia vow to foster a community with a shared future

BEIJING, July 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Earlier this month, Indonesia’s Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway saw the laying of ballasted tracks begin on its main line, marking a solid step of this landmark Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project and signaling the pragmatic cooperation between China and Indonesia.

With a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the railway built with Chinese technology will cut the journey between Jakarta and Bandung, the country’s fourth-largest city, from more than three hours to around 40 minutes.

While meeting Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping Tuesday voiced the hope that key bilateral cooperation projects, including the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project, would advance smoothly. Meanwhile, Widodo called the high-speed railway project another milestone of bilateral friendship.

Under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China and Indonesia have set the direction of building a China-Indonesia community with a shared future and forged a new pattern of bilateral relations featuring the “four-wheel drive” of political, economic, cultural and maritime cooperation.

“China and Indonesia are at similar development stages, have entwined interests, follow similar philosophies and development paths and share a closely connected future,” Xi said, adding that building a China-Indonesia community with a shared future is the common aspiration and expectation of the two peoples.

He said sound Sino-Indonesian relations not only serve the long-term shared interests of the two countries but also have positive and far-reaching effects regionally and globally.

Widodo is the first foreign head of state to visit China after the Beijing Winter Olympics, and China is the first stop of Widodo’s first trip to East Asia since the pandemic.

Resilient and vibrant ties

Despite COVID-19 outbreaks and growing uncertainties, China and Indonesia see unstoppable momentum in their cooperation and are ready to further deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership.

As Xi mentioned in the meeting, the bilateral relationship has shown great resilience and vitality in recent years. China remained Indonesia’s largest trading partner in 2021. According to Chinese customs statistics, trade volume between the two sides was valued at $124.3 billion, with a growth rate of 58.4 percent year on year.

Major cooperation projects, including the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway Project, the Two Countries Twin Parks program and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridors, reflect the highly synergized connectivity between the BRI and Indonesia’s national strategy. Thus, the cooperation projects will produce win-win outcomes in the economic recovery of the country and the wider region.

Vaccine cooperation has also become a new highlight of bilateral relations between the two countries as China is actively supporting Indonesia in building a COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing hub. The hub will, in turn, help Southeast Asia’s vaccine rollout.

Noting that the two countries are an example of major developing countries seeking strength through unity and win-win cooperation, Xi also told Widodo that the Chinese side is willing to foster more growth points with Indonesia, such as in digital economy and green development.

Asian input in global governance

Starting from June, several high-level global or regional economic forums have been scheduled in Asian countries, including China and Indonesia, ushering in an Asian moment due to their role in global governance.

The Chinese president on Tuesday called on the two countries to stand together in solidarity, fulfill the responsibilities of major developing countries, follow true multilateralism, uphold open regionalism and contribute Oriental wisdom and Asia’s input to the development of global governance.

In June, China hosted the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) summit. In November, Indonesia is scheduled to host the G20 Summit, Cambodia will host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Related Summits, and Thailand will host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

Facing a turbulent international situation, the international community is expecting Asia, the largest continental economy, accounting for roughly 40 percent of the world’s total gross domestic product (GDP), to play a leading role in promoting peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large.

Confronting changes in the world that are unfolding in ways like never before, China has put forward the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, which have contributed to China’s approach to advancing building a more just and reasonable global governance system and won extensive support and response from the international community, especially Asian countries.

The two presidents also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis. Academics from “El Colegio de Mexico” conclude tour of Jordanian universities

An academic delegation from the Colegio de México (COLMEX) has concluded a multi-day official visit to Jordan, during which it met with representatives from several Jordanian public and private universities.

The delegation included Dr. Silvia Giorguli, President of El Colegio de Mexico, Dr. Amaury Garcia, Director of the Center for Asian and African Studies, and three of their students, with the goal of discussing aspects of joint cooperation in a variety of academic, language studies, and research fields.

Since its inception in 1940, El Colegio de México (COLMEX) has received numerous awards. COLMEX operates through research centers staffed by a highly qualified academic team.

Its eight academic centers offer Master’s and PHD degrees in history, sociology, economics, political science, linguistics, literature, Asian and African studies, urban studies, demography, and environmental studies.

In addition, there is a master’s program in gender studies, as well as bachelor’s degrees in economics, public administration, and international relations.

There are also centers for Historical Studies, Asian and African Studies, and Social Studies at COLMEX.

Dr. Giorguli, President of COLMEX, expressed her pleasure at meeting the presidents of Jordanian universities and expressed her desire to collaborate with them in the fields of international studies, languages, and comparative research in the social, human, historical, and cultural sciences.

El Colegio de México is a public university that focuses on the teaching and research of the social sciences and humanities, according to Dr. Amaury Garcia, the director of the Center for Asian and African Studies.

For the past sixty years, it has had an interest in studying the countries of the Middle East, and it now has one of the few postgraduate programs in that region in Latin America.

The academic delegation was accompanied by Mexican Ambassador in Amman Roberto Rodriguez Hernandez, who emphasized the depth of Jordanian-Mexican relations and their development in all fields, particularly academic cooperation.

He stated that twelve agreements have been signed between Jordanian and Mexican universities in the areas of scientific research, academic exchanges, and student exchanges, with additional agreements under review or in the process of signing.

Rodriguez further stated that Jordan is known for stability and progress and is regarded as a gateway to the Middle East and the other countries in the region, making the visit of the Mexican academic delegation of COLMEX and its meetings with Jordanian universities an opportunity in which the two friendly nations would benefit.

He also emphasized that his nation can assist Jordan in building relationships with Latin America, which will ultimately have an impact on developing and fostering ties in the areas of education, business, and tourism.

The Mexican delegation met with the University of Jordan and its Center for Strategic Studies, Yarmouk University, the Middle East University, Al-Zaytoonah University of Jordan, and the World Islamic Sciences and Education University. The discussions centered on ways and areas of cooperation, as well as preparations for memorandums of understanding and bilateral agreements that would strengthen academic relations and cooperation.

The presidents of Jordanian universities stressed the importance of building bridges of cooperation with Mexican universities so that both parties can benefit from social sciences research, exchange of knowledge, and scholarships.

Dr. Barakat Awajan, the former minister of culture, following COLMEX’s visit to Jordan. According to Dr. Awajan, the Jordanian-Mexican Friendship Association will support initiatives and efforts that will improve relations between the two nations.
