Syria: 5 killed in car bomb blast

Five people were killed and about thirty were injured on Saturday in a car bomb blast near the southern Syrian city of Daraa, the official Syian News Agency SANA report.

All the fatalities and injuries were civilians who were in a vehicle transporting them to a field for the wheat harvest in a village in rural Daraa, it said.

JAF soldier killed while on UN peacekeeping mission in Mali laid to rest

A Jordanian soldier killed while on duty with UN peacekeepers in Mali was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown in the Karak Governorate.

The General Command of the Jordan Armed Forces- Arab Army (JAF) accorded full military honours to Sergeant Jamil Matrouk, who was a member of the Jordanian rapid Deployment Force Mali/2.

JAF officers carried the coffin of Sayaydeh, which was draped in the Jordanian flag, to the burial site after prayers at a local mosque during a funeral attended by the Assistnt for Operations and Training and other top armed forces and security officers.

The body of the martyr was flown home early this morning and was accorded full molitary honours.

The General Command of the Armed Forces mourned its martyr and paid its codolences to his family.

Water Minister pledges to address rising demand during summer

Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Najjar on Saturday pledged to address the public’s complaints with operators and maintenance teams across the country despite the “critical water situation.”

He spoke during a meeting with Water Authority Secretary-General Bashar Batayneh, directors of water companies and all those concerned with water supply and operation.

The meeting tackled the water situation during this summer in light of water shortages and low supply from the various sources, attacks on water lines, power outages, and rising water demand amid soaring temperatures.

The minister stressed the need to forge ahead with the ministry’s contingency plan, which includes operating some new water resources and the redistribution of supplies according to priority areas.

India: Two killed in protests following ruling party members anti-Islam statements

Indian health officials Saturday said two people were killed and scores injured after Indians took to the streets to protest remarks made by members of the governing party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against Prophet Mohammad.

Press Trust of India (PTI) cited a health official as saying two protestors were admitted to a hospital in the aftermath of widespread protests in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Friday, but they were soon announced dead.

Thousands of Muslims took to the street across India after the Muslim Friday sermon yesterday to protest the inflammatory remarks made by officials of the country’s ruling party, demanding they are held accountable.

Local sources reported the BJP had decided to suspend Nupur Sharma, a spokesperson for the party, following her inflammatory remarks.

Arab league ‘concerned’ over Libya clashes

The Arab League Saturday said it was “deeply concerned” regarding the armed clashes that have erupted in Tripoli, Libya.

The spokesperson for the pan-Arab organisation’s secretary-general, Advisor Jamal Rushdi, said Secretary-General Ahmad Aboul Gheit urged the Libyan parties to uphold the ceasefire agreement, adding it is the most prominent achievement in Libya since October 2020.

Rushdi added the SG supports all efforts to breathe life into the political process in Libya to restore stability, prosperity and development in the country.

Media minister says Jordan should leverage Irbid: Arab Culture Capital 2022

Minister of State for Media Affairs Faisal Shboul Saturday said it is important for Jordan to leverage the Irbid: The 2022 Arab Capital of Culture to promote the Kingdom’s culture and history.

During a meeting with journalists in the Al-Hassan Sports City in Irbid, Shboul highlighted that the event is an important Jordanian and Arab national event, noting the important role of local communities in promoting the event and its success.

He also highlighted the role of the media in covering and promoting the activities of the Irbid: the Capital of Arab Culture 2022 event, whose main ceremony will start tomorrow, under royal patronage, throughout 2022.

He added the event would be an opportunity for coordination between Jordanian and Arab journalists to familiarise them with the history of the city and its role in reviving Jordan’s culture and history.

Shboul lauded the press for supporting Jordan’s national interests, adding: “our media will shoulder its responsibility in promoting the celebrations of Irbid: The Capital of Arab Culture 2022 so that it will become a model for Arab capitals of culture in the coming years.”

Irbid Governor Radwan Atoum, in turn, emphasised the important role of the media in promoting the activities of the upcoming event, pointing to the cooperation and coordination between the provincial council and journalists to make the event a success.

Irbid Mayor Nabil Kofhi noted the municipality is keen to improve the governorate’s infrastructure, adding it began preparations for the event by placing 800 flags and 400 banners and large murals on universities and bridges to promote the event.
