The Northern Military Zone thwarted an infiltration attempt to smuggle weapons and ammunition into the Kingdom early Tuesday.

One of the infiltrators was injured, according to a Jordanian Armed Forces – Arab Army official, and others were apprehended with a variety of weapons and ammunition.

The Army will apply full force to protect the borders from any infiltration or smuggling attempts, the official stressed.

President of the Senate Faisal Fayez on Tuesday met Azerbaijan’s ambassador Eldar Salimov to boost bilateral ties in various fields, especially parliamentary ones, and discuss current issues in the region.

During the meeting, Fayez lauded the high level of the Jordanian-Azeri ties, mainly in economics and politics, stressing the need for further collaboration.

The Azeri envoy commended Jordan’s major role, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, in bringing about security and stability in the region, affirming his country’s commitment to enhancing its relations with Jordan.

On the World No-Tobacco Day, HRH Princess Dina Mired launched Tuesday two guidelines for use by health inspectors at the Ministry of Health and the Amman Municipality to streamline control over the use and sale of tobacco and related products.

The two manuals outline the legal framework for the control process and lay out the steps that health inspectors must follow to guarantee that the inspection and control system is functioning properly.

Princess Dina said during a ceremony that 3.5 million hectares of land are lost each year for tobacco growing, resulting in deforestation, soil degradation, and the loss of water, fossil fuels, and minerals.

She noted that cigarette butts generate 1.69 billion pounds of toxic waste and unleash thousands of chemicals into the air, water, and land, calling for the full enforcement of the Public Health Law and assisting inspectors in protecting citizens from tobacco and its harmful effects.

Dr. Raed Shboul, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Health for Primary Health Care and Epidemiology, stated that Jordan is committed to fighting smoking, as indicated by its 2004 ratification of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

He promised that the Ministry of Health will continue to enforce the law and allocate smoke-free public spaces throughout the Kingdom, emphasizing that the ministry had taken a number of legal, educational, administrative, and control steps.

In turn, Dr. Jamila Al-Rabi, the World Health Organization’s representative in Jordan, said that the Ministry of Health, the Greater Amman Municipality, and the WHO in Jordan made a significant effort to release the two guides in order to improve tobacco product inspection and control.

Al-Rabi cited a study on the number of smokers in Jordan undertaken by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the organization, which found that 80 percent of adults in Jordan are exposed to passive smoking.

She also noted that the report revealed alarming statistics concerning Jordan’s smoking issue, requiring an effective response to outlaw smoking in public areas.

Samer Majali, the CEO of Royal Jordanian (RJ), has pleaded for immediate assistance to help the national carrier overcome accumulated losses of JD321 million.

The company lost key revenue sources after some of its businesses were privatized, Majali told the House of Representatives Tourism, Antiquities, and Public Services Committee on Tuesday.

He also blamed his company’s losses on fuel monopoly and exorbitant costs, as well as the failure to provide Royal Jordanian any preferential or special treatment, despite the fact that it competes with government-subsidized regional airlines.

The company’s accumulated losses, according to the CEO, totaled JD321 million, or 99 percent of its capital, of which 161 million was a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic, during which air traffic was nearly halted.

Majali also told the lawmakers that the company is currently in talks with the government to raise its capital by about JD70 million.

Minister of Labor Nayef Istitieh on Tuesday met the Dutch Ambassador for Youth, Education, and Work Tijmen Rooseboom to discuss prospects of cooperation and coordination in many fields under the support of the two countries’ leaders.

Istitieh highlighted cooperation areas available between the two countries, saying that Jordan is currently training its human resources in various fields to qualify for new job opportunities.

Istitieh and Rooseboom spoke about means of enabling youth by training them on skills they need to enter the labor market, mainly in vocational training and training on curricula development.

For his part, Rooseboom commended the level of the Jordanian-Dutch ties, stressing further collaboration with Jordan in many fields to serve the interests of the two countries’ peoples.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) launched a regional initiative aimed at reducing inequities in the Arab world by providing work possibilities for young people, enhancing their skills, and facilitating their job training.

The “Josour” initiative was launched at the first Arab Forum for Equality, which took place over two days in Amman.

Rola Dashti, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCWA, said the initiative brings together those who present possibilities with those who have the potential to innovate for societal development, and it will be implemented in every Arab country.

She urged the business sector to provide opportunities for young people, train them, and invest in their potential, ideas, and talents in order to bridge societal gaps.

The First Arab Forum for Equality, in its final statement, urged for the establishment of comprehensive social safety systems, improved school quality and retention rates, more affordable housing, gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the inclusion of individuals with disabilities.

It also advocated the formulation of social and economic development strategies based on collaboration between state institutions, the business sector, and civil society in order to combat corruption, improve transparency, and develop rules and regulations that are responsive to changing societal requirements.

The Forum also called for the adoption of policies that would increase access to education, work, and social security for individuals with disabilities, women, and residents of remote areas, as well as their participation in decision-making.
