Ukraine envoy: Jordan, Ukraine on track for closer relations

Ukrainian Ambassador Myroslava Shcherbatiuk said Saturday that her country’s relations with Jordan are on track for more cooperation in the various fields.

She told reporters that the two countries are celebrating this year the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, which enabled robust bilateral ties in trade, economic, political, military and security fields.

The two countries share a common vision on a number of crucial issues and meet the requirements for a stronger partnership, especially in the areas of food security, economic ties, security and defence, she said, stressing that the two countries stand firmly against terrorism and extremism and advocate for tolerance and international law.

The envoy stressed that Ukraine considers Jordan a reliable partner, and that it will support the Kingdom in all fields, especially education and food security, to enhance the Kingdom’s pivotal role in the region.

She said that Ukraine today observes National Unity Day, which marks the anniversary of the unification of eastern and western Ukraine in 1919.

Aqaba Port revenue up 4% last year

Aqaba Port revenue rose by JD66 million in 2021, about 4 per cent up compared to 2020, and the number of travelers at the passenger terminal soared to a quarter of a million, with an increase of 17 per cent, General Manager of the Aqaba Company for Ports Operation and Management Khaled Al Maaytah said.

He said in press remarks that the increase is an indication that Aqaba Port is on the road to recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, noting that the volume of handling at the port reached 15 million tons of various food commodities, livestock and vehicles.

However, he pointed to a decline in container handling due to surging global shipping fares.

Dhaman report: Investment volume in Jordan to increase in 2022

A report recently released by the Arab Investment and Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (Dhaman) forecasts a rise in the total investments in Jordan during 2022, compared to last year.

Total investments in Jordan during 2022 would reach $8.9 billion, or 17.8%of the total Gross domestic product (GDP), Dhaman report showed.

The value of investments in the Kingdom during 2021 would be $8.4 billion, constituting 18.5% of the GDP for the same year, the report forecast.

Meanwhile, investments during 2019 and 2018 stood at 16.7% and 17.6 percent of the GDP, with a value of $7.5 billion and $7.6 billion, respectively, Dhaman said.

According to the report’s estimates, Jordan’s GDP will “continue to grow,” reaching $47.5 billion in 2022, at a rate of 2.7%, while the growth rate in 2018 and 2020 was 1.9% and 1.6%, respectively.

GDP Per capita could have risen to approximately $4,394 in 2021, from $4,286 in 2020, and approximately $4,425 and $4,341 in 2019 and 2018, respectively, the report said, expecting it to go up to $4,565 this year.

Dhaman forecast also indicated a rise in inflation in Jordan by 2% in 2022, compared to 1.6% in 2021.

The report expected a drop in the budget deficit by 5.9% of GDP in 2022, compared to expectations of 7.8% in 2021, to reach $2.8 billion instead of $3.5 billion for the same year, while the deficit in the period from 2018 to 2020 ranged between $1.9 billion. and $3.9 billion.

Regarding the Kingdom’s foreign debt, the report expected its volume to reach $39.3 billion in 2022, or 82.7% of the GDP, compared to $37.6 billion, $34.3 billion, $30.3 billion, and $29.2 billion in 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018, respectively.

According to Dhaman estimates, the Kingdom’s foreign currency reserve will rise during 2022 to $17.8 billion, compared to expectations of $17.1 billion in 2021, covering nearly 9 months of imports of goods and services, for each year.

Royal Jordanian reduced losses by half in 2021…1st, final add

Regarding its flight expansion, Majali said the RJ has approved a five-year operational plan aimed to travel to 60 global destinations over the next five years, and building a “robust” regional aviation network through Amman.

Under the plan, he said the RJ will reach 60 global destinations up from the current 35 during the next five years, and will increase its aircraft fleet from the 24 current planes to 45.

Majali added that RJ is investing in “the Kingdom’s capabilities as a center of economic activity in the region”.

The new operational expansion plan comes after the RJ tackled years of stagnation caused by regional conditions and the Covid-19 crisis, according to Majali.

Majali announced resumption of RJ flights to Moscow, Copenhagen, Geneva and Zurich, with two flights per week, after travel suspension imposed by Covid-19 crisis restrictions, adding RJ has launched its new destination, to the Iraqi city of Najaf.

Majali voiced concerns about the spread of Omicron strain, which fueled people’s fears to travel, pointing to the decline in travel during the current month of January, despite previous “optimistic” forecasts of its recovery in 2022.

As for investments to support RJ, he said the airline is discussing re-investing in the travel support services, stressing the success of the privatization process of the RJ-supporting companies, even though their complete privatization was not “appropriate.”

Majali added: “If RJ had acquired a stake in these companies when privatized, it would have helped the airline address the current economic conditions.”

On the competition with low-cost airlines, Majali stressed that RJ is able to support group tourism to and from the Kingdom if the company receives government support and incentives granted to international low-cost airlines.

Regarding activation of IATA Travel Pass, Majali said the RJ will start using this mobile app within a month, which is in its final stages in preparation for its operationalization, in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship.

Royal Jordanian reduced losses by half in 2021-CEO

Royal Jordanian (RJ) President/CEO Samer Majali said the national carrier slashed its losses by half in 2021, compared to 2020, expecting to reach the equilibrium point next year by implementing a package of measures for growth and expansion in operations.

In his interview with “Petra,” on Saturday, Majali noted the RJ is “still waiting for government support to enable the airline to overcome losses due to the Covid-19 induced repercussions.”

RJ will not have the capability to compete and grow in the future if government support is not available, whose contribution in the company now stands at 85%, according to Majali.

On the airline’s current financial situation, he said the Covid-19 pandemic-related repercussions have caused the RJ JD160 million in losses in 2020, in addition to accumulated losses in 2019 of about JD80 million, bringing the total to JD240 million.

Losses will soon affect the RJ’s capital, which calls for “urgent” government intervention to save the airline that “suffered losses beyond its control” during the Covid-19 pandemic, Majali warned.

“RJ requested government financial support worth JD200 million to increase its capital,” he said, stressing that the government has the responsibility to support RJ as a strategic tool for the Jordanian state to maintain operations worldwide.

RJ did not receive any support for its losses during the Covid-19 pandemic, like international airlines which received government assistance, in recognition of the level of impact of the Covid-19 crisis repercussions on their revenues that collapsed due to the suspension of global travel, according Majali.

Very cold weather Saturday, snow flurries forecast tomorrow night on hilltops-JMD

Saturday will see a very cold and stable weather almost countrywide, while it will be less colder in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba, with southeasterly moderate winds, Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily update.

In its report, the JMD warns of the danger of frost formation in the early morning and late night hours, especially over the highlands and parts of the Badia regions.

According to the report, Sunday will also see a similar weather during daytime. Meanwhile during the evening hours, the Kingdom is affected by a depression and rain is set to fall in the Kingdom’s northern and central areas, extending gradually during the night to the southwestern regions. Downpour may be sometimes heavy in parts of the northern parts at night.

During the late night hours, light flurries of rain-mixed snow will fall over the highlands and winds will be westerly active, with strong gusts of dust, in desert areas, the JMD added.

On Monday, a drop in mercury is forecast and the weather will be very cold, with continued downpour during daytime in the Kingdom’s northern, central and southwestern regions, the JMD said.

Also on Saturday, temps in Amman will range between a high of 10 degrees Celsius during daytime, dropping to 0C at night, meanwhile Aqaba mercury levels are forecast to hover around a high of 18C and a low of 7C.
