FTA welcomes setting up higher council for food security in Kingdom

The Foodstuff Traders Association’s (FTA), on Friday, welcomed setting up of a higher council for food security by the government in the Kingdom, which will contribute to sustaining a strategic reserve of basic commodities and foodstuff.

Head of the FTA, Khalil Hajj Tawfiq, said that the council is one of the outcomes of the food security strategy in the Kingdom, adding that this body will activate the partnership between the public and private sectors.

The Kingdom imports food at estimated annual value of $4 billion, part of which is raw materials, while the other part is products ready for consumption.

The foodstuff sector constitutes 30 per cent of the size of the commercial sector, with more than 50,000 big and small facilities across the Kingdom, employing some 250,000 workers.

Depression to continue affecting, as heavy rain drenches south

The depression that affected the Kingdom, yesterday, to continues affecting, bringing heavy rain to the south parts of the country, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said.

Winds will be southwesterly moderate, picking up at times.

The JMD warned of slippery roads, torrent formation, and low visibility, namely, in mountainous areas.

In Amman, temperatures will see a high of 9 degrees Celsius and a low of 3 degrees.

In Aqaba, temperatures will range from 20 degrees to 12.

EAIIA calls for not reducing customs duties on imports

The Eastern Amman Industrial Investors association (EAIIA), on Friday, called on the government not to reduce customs duties on imports.

The EAIIA, in a statement, said such move will adversely affect the industrial sector in the Kingdom, adding that reducing customs duties on imports will threaten the competitiveness of the Jordanian industry locally and abroad.

The statement stressed that the industrial sector has contributed to maintaining food security during the COVID-19 outbreak.

India: At least 12 dead in New Year temple stampede

At least 12 people have been killed and several others injured after a stampede at a Hindu shrine in India.

Police said it was triggered by an argument between devotees at the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in Indian-administered Kashmir on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “saddened” by the loss of life.

Tens of thousands of people usually visit the shrine every day, and it is thought there was a peak in visitors because of the holiday season.

Inclusion of 2021 exports within gov’t support program enhances competitiveness – says JEA

Head of the Jordan Exporters Association (JEA), Ahmad Khudari, highlighted the importance of the government decision to include Jordanian exports in 2021 within a program to support Jordanian exports to international markets.

In a statement, Khudari said the decision is a key step in terms of supporting exports and increasing their presence in international markets, especially with the start of their recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19.

He stressed that the national industry is one of the most important pillars in building the national economy in light of its contributions that reach more than 24 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), in addition to hiring more than 254 thousand workers, while industrial exports contribute to more than 90 percent of the total national exports, with a value of up to JD5 billion annually.

The government had launched a program aimed at supporting industrial exports by giving exporters sums of money for their exports, at a rate of 3 percent for what is issued at the end of 2019 and for the second year, the percentage rises to 5 percent.

PSD warns public of adverse weather conditions

The Public Security Department (PSD), on Friday, urged the public to aide instructions issued by the department due to the depression which currently affecting the Kingdom.

The PSD urged people living in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground, calling on the public to drive carefully during the current weather conditions.

It also warned of low-visibility due to low-altitude clouds in hilly areas and slippery roads.

The PSD called on the public not to hesitate to ask for help upon emergencies through calling 911.

Australia starts 2022 with record COVID cases

Australia started 2022 with a record number of new COVID-19 cases as an outbreak centred in the eastern states grew, and New South Wales eased its isolation rules for healthcare workers as the number of people hospitalised with the virus rose.

New South Wales, the most populous state, and Victoria both posted daily record case numbers of 22,577 and 7,442 respectively on Saturday, health department figures showed.

There were four deaths due to COVID in New South Wales and nine in Victoria, taking the national death toll from the pandemic to more than 2,250.

Including cases in Queensland, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, Saturday had already set a national record of 33,161 cases, topping Friday’s 32,946, even before numbers from South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory were released.

New COVID restrictions would be a last resort, says UK health minister

New restrictions in England to slow the spread of COVID-19 will only be introduced as a last resort, health minister Sajid Javid said, stressing that although hospitalisations were rising, the number of patients in intensive care was stable.

The rapid spread of the Omicron variant across the United Kingdom has sent infections to record highs, with close to 190,000 new cases reported on Friday.

Britain has not brought in new rules for England, which accounts for more than 80 percent of the UK population.

Jordan registers 31 COVID-19 related deaths, 872 infections on Saturday

31 new deaths and 872 cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were recorded in Jordan on Saturday.

With today’s fatalities and infections, the caseload and death toll from the disease have increased to 12,684 and 1,064,277 respectively, since the outbreak began in March of 2020, according to the Ministry of Health daily brief.

The number of cases that required admission to hospitals today stood at 75, while 62 cases have recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

On the capacity of hospitals in the Kingdom, the brief said that the occupancy rate of isolation beds in the northern region was at 19 per cent, intensive care beds 37 per cent and ventilators 21 per cent.

In the Central region, isolation beds were at an occupancy rate of 20 per cent, ICU beds at 41 per cent and ventilators 20 per cent, it said.

In the south, it added, the occupancy rate of isolation beds reached 8 per cent, ICU beds 13 per cent and ventilators 13 per cent.

It said that 27,510 PCR tests were collected today, bringing the total number of tests conducted since the start of the pandemic to 13,575,729 and that the positivity rate today was about 3.17 per cent.
