Young woman’s killer in Ashrafieh apprehended

Police on Saturday evening arrested a suspect who reportedly murdered a young Arab woman yesterday at dawn in the Ashrafieh area in central Amman.

Police at dawn yesterday, received a report on a young woman who was stabbed by an unknown person while she was in the Ashrafieh, and soon died of her injury, the Public Security Department (PSD) spokesperson said in a statement.

He added that following the investigations into the case and gathering information, the killer, who had been on hiding since committing the murder, was identified.

On the evening, the perpetrator whereabouts were identified, he was arrested, and an investigation was initiated, in preparation to refer him to the judiciary, the PSD spokesperson concluded.

Jordan condemns deadly attacks on Nigeria mosque, bus

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Saturday condemned attacks that targeted a mosque and a bus in Nigeria and left dozens of people dead or injured.

Ministry spokesperson Haitham Abu Al-Ful reiterated the Kingdom’s condemnation and denunciation of such terror acts, which “run contrary to all humanitarian and religious values and principles”.

He expressed the Kingdom’s solidarity with Nigeria, extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured speedy recovery.

UN representative visits Jordan, examines its experience in eliminating violence against children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said that the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence Against Children (SRSG/VAC), Najat Maalla M’jid, is currently visiting the Kingdom to examine the Jordanian experience in eliminating violence against children.

A UNICEF statement explained that the visit, which concludes in December 16, comes within the framework of expressing the appreciation of the SRSG/VAC for the Jordanian government’s commitment to prevent violence against children, and support joint efforts to expand the scope of work to eliminate forms of violence against children.

M’jid will meet directly with children, women and local communities, and hold extensive consultations with all stakeholders, including ministers, policy makers, civil society institutions, NGOs, the National Center for Human Rights (NCHR), the National Council For Family Affairs (NCFA), United Nations organizations and local communities, the statement said.

The UN Secretary-General has appointed Najat Maalla M’jid of Morocco as Special Representative on Violence against Children on May 30, 2019.

M’jid, a medical doctor in paediatrics, has over the last three decades devoted her life to the promotion and protection of children’s rights. She was Head of the Pediatric Department and Director of the Hay Hassani Mother-Child hospital in Casablanca. M’jid is a member of the Moroccan National Council on Human Rights.

Royal Initiatives: New youth facilities opened in Mafraq

Chief of the Royal Court Yousef Issawi Saturday inaugurated youth and education facilities in Mafraq Governorate under the Royal Initiatives, which His Majesty King Abdullah ordered during his meetings with dignitaries of the northeastern region.

Issawi, head of the committee to follow-up on the implementation of Royal Initiatives, opened the new premises of the Manshiyet Bani Hassan Club during a ceremony attended by Minister of Public Works and Housing Yahya Kasbi and Youth Minister Mohammad Nabulsi.

He unveiled the memorial plaque of the fully-equipped two-storey building and toured its various facilities, including a sports hall, a meeting hall and offices that cater to the youth sector in the region.

At Al al-Bayt University, the Royal Court Chief, in the presence of the university’s president Hani Dmour, unveiled the plaque of a closed semi-Olympic swimming pool as well as offices, a logistics building and a parking lot.

He also toured the facilities of the faculties of administrative sciences and engineering at the university, which were refurbished and equipped according top up-to-date technical and engineering standards.

In Al-Baej, Issawi opened a five-a-side playground at the local sports club, which aims to promote the youth and sports movement in the governorate in line with His Majesty’s vision to build youth capacities and promote their talents.

In Jubaiha district of Amman, the Royal Court Chief handed over the keys of a new home to a low-income family, part of the Royal Initiative to provide decent housing to impoverished households across the country.

Issawi told Petra in an interview that the Royal Initiatives aim to make “a qualitative leap” in the targeted regions and local communities, and provide an appropriate environment and incubator of youth energies, talents and creativity.

He said that the citizens can feel the positive impact of Royal Initiatives projects and programmes being carried out in the various regions that encompass multiple vital sectors, mainly services, youth, education and social welfare.

Jordan expresses condolences to US over hurricane victims

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday expressed condolences to the government and the people of the United States over the victims of the hurricane in the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The hurricane left dozens of fatalities and injuries, and heavy material damage.

The ministry spokesperson Haitham Abu Al Foul voiced the Kingdom’s solidarity with the government and the people of the US and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The ministry called on Jordanians residing in the states affected by the hurricane to exercise caution, comply with public safety instructions issued by the US authorities and contact the operations center number, 0096279549777, at the ministry’s headquarters in case of an emergency or the emergency number of the Kingdom’s embassy in Washington: 2022949522.
