• الحملة تسلط الضوء على أهمية الفحص الذاتي لضمان الكشف المبكر عن سرطان الثدي

• بمناسبة شهر التوعية بسرطان الثدي، ستستمر الحملة طيلة شهر أكتوبر

دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة, 24 أكتوبر / تشرين أول 2021 /PRNewswire/ — أعلنت MSD، الشركة العالمية الرائدة في مجال المستحضرات الصيدلانية البيولوجية، بالتعاون مع “جمعية الإمارات للأورام” و”أصدقاء مرضى السرطان”، عن إطلاق حملة “EMBRACE” للتوعية بسرطان الثدي. وسيتعاون الشركاء على مدار شهر أكتوبر الجاري لإطلاق سلسلة من الأنشطة والمبادرات والحملات المصممة لزيادة الوعي بأعراض سرطان الثدي، وتشجيع الفحوصات المنتظمة لضمان التشخيص المبكر والمباشرة بالعلاج الفوري.

وتسلط حملة “Embrace” الضوء على أهمية الفحوصات الذاتية، وتطالب النساء بالفحص الذاتي بشكل دوري بحثًا عن الألم أو عن تغيرات في الحجم أو الكتل أو زيادة التورم تحت الإبطين. وفي هذه المناسبة سيتم إضاءة برج خليفةيوم 19 اكتوبر، أطول مبنى في العالم، وبرواز دبي“Dubai Frame” باللون الوردي، وهو اللون التقليدي لشهر التوعية بسرطان الثدي. وتشمل حملة “Embrace” أنشطة أخرى كالفحص المجاني في القافلة الوردية لجمعية “أصدقاء مرضى السرطان” في برواز دبي “Dubai Frame”في 29 أكتوبر. وستقدم القافلة الوردية المتنقلة خدمات تشخيصية وفحوصًا طبية مجانية وتصوير ماموغرام للنساء اللواتي تظهر عليهن الأعراض بعد إرشادهن حول كيفية إجراء الفحص الذاتي عبر ثماني عيادات طبية متنقلة..

.من جانبه، علق الدكتور حميد الشامسي، رئيس جمعية الإمارات للأورام قائلًا: “يعد سرطان الثدي من أكثر أنواع السرطانات شيوعًا بين النساء في الإمارات العربية المتحدة، إذ تم تشخيص 1030 حالة سرطان ثدي بين النساء¹ في الدولة العام الماضي. وفي حين أن غالبية النساء المصابات بسرطان الثدي تزيد أعمارهن عن 50 عامًا²، فإن نسبة ضئيلة من النساء دون سن الـ 45 سيحصلن أيضًا على تشخيص إيجابي³. وفي حال تم اكتشاف سرطان الثدي مبكرًا، ثمة فرصة للشفاء منه بنسبة 99 % ⁴ لمدة خمس سنوات. وثمة نوع عدواني من سرطان الثدي المعروف باسم سرطان الثدي الثلاثي السلبي الذي يصيب النساء الأصغر سنًا، ويمثل ما بين 10-15 %⁵من إجمالي الحالات. هذا الواقع يترجم أهمية الفحوصات المبكرة والمنتظمة لدى النساء. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، من الضروري جداً التعرف على العلامات التي تنذر بوجود الكتل أو الورم، إلى جانب ممارسة الرياضة والحفاظ على وزن صحي للجسم”.

وأظهرت دراسة صادرة من مركز إحصائيات السرطان جلوبوكان في العام 2020، أن 222 ⁶ امرأة تتوفى من سرطان الثدي في الإمارات العربية المتحدة كل عام، ويعتبر السبب الأول للوفيات بنسبة 11.7% من أولئك الذين يتوفون بسبب المرض. ويعتبر سرطان الثدي الثلاثي السلبي من أنواع سرطان الثدي العدوانية الذي يتميز بمعدل تكرار مرتفع خلال السنوات الخمس الأولى بعد التشخيص. وفي حين أن بعض الأشخاص المصابين بسرطان الثدي قد يكون اختبارهم إيجابيًا لمستقبل هرمون الاستروجين، أو مستقبل البروجسترون، وبروتين المستقبل 2 لعامل نمو البشرة البشري (HER2)، فإن الأشخاص المصابين بسرطان الثدي الثلاثي السلبي اختبارهم سلبي ⁷ للثلاثة أجمع.

Pope: Don’t Send Migrants Back to Libya and ‘Inhumane’ Camps

VATICAN CITY —

Pope Francis on Sunday made an impassioned plea to end the practice of returning migrants rescued at sea to Libya and other unsafe countries where they suffer “inhumane violence.”

Francis also waded into a highly contentious political debate in Europe, calling on the international community to find concrete ways to manage the “migratory flows” in the Mediterranean.

“I express my closeness to the thousands of migrants, refugees and others in need of protection in Libya,” Francis said. “I never forget you, I hear your cries and I pray for you.”

Even as the pontiff appealed for changes of migrant policy and of heart in his remarks to the public in St. Peter’s Square, hundreds of migrants were either at sea in the central Mediterranean awaiting a port after rescue or recently coming ashore in Sicily or the Italian mainland after setting sail from Libya or Turkey, according to authorities.

“So many of these men, women and children are subject to inhumane violence,” he added. “Yet again I ask the international community to keep the promises to search for common, concrete and lasting solutions to manage the migratory flows in Libya and in all the Mediterranean.”

“How they suffer, those who are sent back” after rescue at sea, the pope said. Detention facilities in Libya, he said “are true concentration camps.”

“We need to stop sending back [migrants] to unsafe countries and to give priority to the saving of human lives at sea with protocols of rescue and predictable disembarking, to guarantee them dignified conditions of life, alternatives to detention, regular paths of migration and access to asylum procedures,” Francis said.

U.N. refugee agency officials and human rights organizations have long denounced the conditions of detention centers for migrants in Libya, citing practices of beatings, rape and other forms of torture and insufficient food. Migrants endure weeks and months of those conditions, awaiting passage in unseaworthy rubber dinghies or rickety fishing boats arranged by human traffickers.

Hours after the pope’s appeal, the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders said that its rescue ship, Geo Barents, reached a rubber boat that was taking on water, with the sea buffeted by strong winds and waves up to three meters (10 feet) high. It tweeted that “we managed to rescue all the 71 people on board.”

The group thanked the charity group Alarm Phone for signaling that the boat crowded with migrants was in distressed.

Earlier, Geo Barents, then with 296 migrants aboard its rescue ship, was awaiting permission in waters off Malta to disembark. Six migrants tested positive for COVID-19, but because of the crowded conditions aboard, it was difficult to keep them sufficiently distant from the others, Doctors Without Borders said.

In Sicily, a ship operated by the German charity Sea-Watch, with 406 rescued migrants aboard, was granted permission to enter port. But Sea-Watch said that a rescue vessel operated by a Spanish charity, with 105 migrants aboard, has been awaiting a port assignment to disembark them for four days.

While hundreds of thousands of migrants have departed in traffickers’ boats for European shores in recent years and set foot on Sicily or nearby Italian islands, many reach the Italian mainland.

Red Cross officials in Roccella Ionica, a town on the coast of the “toe” of the Italian peninsula said on Sunday that about 700 migrants, some of them from Afghanistan, reached the Calabrian coast in recent days on boats that apparently departed from Turkey.

Authorities said so far this year, about 3,400 migrants had reached Roccella Ionica, a town of 6,000 people, compared to 480 in all of 2019. The migrants who arrived in the last several days were being housed in tent shelters, RAI state television said.

Italy and Malta have come under criticism by human rights advocates for leaving migrants aboard crowded rescue boats before assigning them a safe port.

The Libyan coast guard, which has been trained and equipped by Italy, has also been criticized for rescuing migrants in Libyan waters and then returning them to land where the detention centers awaited them.

On Friday, Doctors Without Borders tweeted that crew aboard the Geo Barents had “witnessed an interception” by the Libyan coast guard and that the migrants “”will be forcibly taken to dangerous detention facilities and exposed to violence and exploitation.”

With rising popularity of right-wing, anti-migrant parties in Italy in recent years, the Italian government has been under increasing domestic political pressure to crack down on illegal immigration.

Italy and Malta have lobbied theirs European Union partner countries, mainly in vain, to take in some of those rescued at sea.

‘Our Dream Came to an End’ – Afghan Female Athletes Speak Out About Taliban’s Return

Women athletes in Afghanistan say the Taliban’s return to power has put an end to their dreams of playing sports at the national and international levels.

“It is over,” said 21-year-old Homaira Barakzai, the captain of Afghanistan’s national handball team, adding that “Everything has changed with the political change (Taliban’s return). Our only hope right now is to survive. Our future, as athletes, is unknown.”

After seizing power in August, the Taliban rolled back the hard-won women’s rights gained in the past two decades in Afghanistan. They did so by imposing strict restrictions on women, including a ban on women’s sports.

“It was very painful” to see that Afghanistan did not play in the Asian Women’s Handball Championship, said Barakzai. The games were held September 15-25 in Amman, Jordan.

Barakzai added that the Taliban’s takeover of the Afghan capital and the chaos at the Kabul airport after the collapse of the Afghan government prevented them from traveling to Amman for the games.

“It would have been a major achievement not only for us (the team) but for Afghan women and Afghanistan if we participated and won,” said Barakzai, who led the Afghan handball squad for the past four years.

Barakzai said now that the Taliban again control Afghanistan, she will not be able to play for her country. “Our dream came to an end as the Taliban returned to power.”

The Taliban, who took control of Afghanistan in August, barred women from work, secondary education and playing sports.

‘Very disappointing’

A high-ranking Taliban official told the Australian broadcaster SBS last month that Afghan women will not be allowed to play sports if they cannot “get an Islamic dress code.”

“It is obvious that they will get exposed and will not follow the dress code, and Islam does not allow that,” said Ahmadullah Wasiq, the deputy head of the Taliban cultural commission.

Mashhed Barez, a member of Afghanistan’s national handball team, told VOA that the Taliban ban on women’s sports is “very disappointing.”

She said the Taliban have not changed from what she heard about the group’s rule in the late 1990s.

“If someone thinks that the Taliban have changed, they are mistaken. The Taliban want people to live in poverty and misery,” Barez said.

Under Taliban rule in the late 1990s, women were forced to cover themselves from head to foot. They were not allowed to leave their houses without a male companion. The Taliban forbade women from playing sports.

That, however, changed after 2001 when a new Afghan government, supported by U.S.-led forces, adopted new policies encouraging girls to attend school and women to participate in the workforce.

In the past 20 years, millions of girls enrolled in schools, and tens of thousands of women served in the public and private sectors. Afghan women athletes have participated at national and international tournaments, including the Olympic Games.

But with the Taliban returning to power in Afghanistan, circumstances have changed.

Safety concerns

New York-based rights group Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the Taliban of widespread human rights violations against Afghan women and girls.

In a statement last month, HRW’s associate director of the Women’s Rights Division, Heather Barr, said “women’s rights activists and high-profile women have been harassed and many are afraid and in hiding.”

“Because my parents were worried about my safety, I had to move to a relative’s house,” said Barakzai. “Now I cannot go out. I have to stay at home.”

She added that other members of the Afghan national handball team also live in fear.

Arzo Rahimi, chairperson of the Girls Football Federation in Afghanistan, told VOA that the international sports bodies should not forget about the country’s women athletes.

“They should not be left behind,” said Rahimi.

She added that athletes’ lives “are in danger under the Taliban,” and urged the international community to help with their evacuation to safety.

Evacuation

Last week, the world soccer body, FIFA, evacuated 100 football players and their families from Afghanistan with the help of the Qatari government.

The International Olympic Committee and a number of other sports bodies and countries have helped in the evacuation of dozens of other women athletes.

London-based rights group Amnesty International said in a statement this week that though the international evacuation of at-risk Afghans from Afghanistan ended two months ago, “those left behind face formidable obstacles to seeking safety outside the country.”

Freshta Ahmadzai, a member of the Afghan national basketball team, told VOA that women athletes, being at high risk, are “forced” to leave the country because the Taliban do not give women their rights.

“We live like prisoners at home. We will be forced to leave the country,” she said.

Ahmadzai called on the international community to put pressure on the Taliban to honor their pledges to respect women’s rights.

“If the Taliban allow women to work and play sports, I will not leave my country,” Ahmadzai said.

WHO Chief: Barriers to Vaccination Goal are ‘Politics and Profit’

The director-general of the World Health Organization said Sunday that unless countries use existing tools in the fight against the pandemic effectively, there will be no end in sight. “The pandemic will end when the world chooses to end it,” Tedros said addressing World Health Summit, a global forum held in Germany.

“We have all the tools we need — effective public health tools and effective medical tools. But the world has not used those tools well,” Tedros said, addressing participants drawn from 100 countries online.

The barriers to fulfilling WHO’s goal of vaccinating 40% of every country’s population against the coronavirus are “politics and profit,” the WHO chief said, “not production.”

“The countries that have already reached the 40% target, including all G-20 countries, must give their place in the vaccine delivery queue to COVAX and the African Vaccines Acquisition Trust,” Tedros said. COVAX is the international collaboration established for the equitable distribution of the COVID vaccine.

The WHO official also urged vaccine producers to “prioritize and fulfil their contracts with COVAX and AVAT [the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust]” and become “far more transparent about what is going where.” AVAT is an African Union initiative focusing on providing access to COVID-19 vaccines across Africa.

He urged vaccine manufacturers to “share know-how, technology and licenses, and waive intellectual property rights.”

“We’re not asking for charity,” Tedros said,” we’re calling for a common-sense investment in the global recovery.”

A report in The Washington Post says Americans living abroad are struggling to receive COVID vaccines, while many of their U.S. counterparts are starting to receive booster shots after receiving their first two vaccine doses.

Marylouise Serrato, executive director of American Citizens Abroad, told the Post, “You have Americans who are filing and paying taxes, and a promise by the administration that all Americans will get vaccinated, and yet that whole community has been left out of the equation.”

The White House “has insisted that it has no special responsibility to vaccinate Americans abroad,” the Post reported. At least 9 million Americans are living overseas, the report added.

A surge of British COVID cases has Dr. Edward Morris, the president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, concerned the National Health Service may not be able to provide “the care it needs to” for women giving birth, according to a report in The Guardian.

Morris also said the COVID surge has also resulted in the creation of an enormous backlog of cases of women who have had to postpone gynecological treatments.

The Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center reported early Monday that it has recorded 243.7 million global COVID infections and nearly 5 million global deaths. Almost 7 billion vaccines have been administered, according to the university’s data.
