Landmark global corporate tax deal finally finds agreement

A group of 136 countries on Friday set a minimum global tax rate of 15 per cent for big companies and sought to make it harder for them to avoid taxation in a landmark deal that U.S. President Joe Biden said levelled the playing field.

The deal aims to end a four-decade-long “race to the bottom” by setting a floor for countries that have sought to attract investment and jobs by taxing multinational companies lightly, effectively allowing them to shop around for low tax rates.

Japan PM Kishida vows to devote himself to ending COVID-19 crisis

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Friday he would do his utmost to lead Japan out of the COVID-19 crisis, while protecting its territory and people in an increasingly tough security environment.

Kishida took the top job in the world’s third-largest economy on Monday, replacing Yoshihide Suga, who had seen his support undermined by surging COVID-19 infections. Daily cases have recently fallen and a long state of emergency was lifted this month.

“I’m determined to devote body-and-soul to overcome this national crisis with the people, carve out a new era and pass on to the next generation a country whose citizens are rich at heart,” Kishida said in his first policy speech to parliament.

Jordan’s pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020 opens

The Jordanian pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020 kicked off with a wide participation of Jordanian, Arab and foreign officials, in addition to Jordanian and Arab community members.

In Dubai, Commissioner General of the Jordanian Pavilion in Expo 2020, Abdul Fattah Al Kayed on Friday on the sidelines of the global gathering, told Petra that the great momentum witnessed on the first day of the opening of the Jordanian pavilion reflects the kingdom’s emergence in the technical, economic and tourism aspects.

The focus at the pavilion, Al Kayed stressed, was on displaying the creativity of Jordanian youth, and the technical equipment of the pavilion was made by Jordanian young men and women.

The six-month, multibillion-dollar global innovation fair, set to be the largest event ever staged in the Arab world, was expected to attract some 24 million visitors starting October 20 this year.

During a visit to the Za’atari camp yesterday, he stressed Denmark’s keenness to continue supporting the Jordanian government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and to contribute to raising the standard of living for refugees.

During the visit, through which he was accompanied by the country representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Dominic Bartsch, the Minister was briefed on projects and future visions and how to support refugees and their situation in Mafraq Governorate and Za’atari camp.

The visit included the Princess Basma Center in Umm al-Jimal and a review of the projects provided by the center to help refugees and the local community, as well as community centers inside the camp, and a tour inside the commercial market.
