Pritzker Military Museum & Library Announces Finalists in International Design Competition for the Cold War Veterans Memorial

Somers, Wisconsin, Sept. 21, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In April 2021, the Pritzker Military Museum & Library, located in Chicago, launched an international competition for the new Cold War Veterans Memorial to be built in Somers, Wisconsin. After reviewing an impressive number of inspiring design concepts, four finalists have been selected to advance to Stage II of the competition. The Cold War Veterans Memorial will be a critical piece of the Pritzker Archives and Memorial Park Center (PAMPC) currently under development.

“In missions on and off the battlefield, Americans of all stripes made immense sacrifices in defense of our national interest. They deserve to be recognized, and the weight of this era deserves to be understood. This Memorial will provide a place where their contributions are honored,” said Col. Jennifer Pritzker, Founder of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library.

The four finalists are representatives from the U.S., Italy, Japan, and Jordan. These individuals and groups achieved the highest scores against strict criteria, including individuality, relevance, and conceptualization. The design challenge was to provide a conceptual design for the Cold War Veterans Memorial that embraces the mission statement, exemplifies the guiding vision, and achieves the design goals. The finalists include:

  • INFINITE LIFE – Michele De Lucchi con Francesco Forcella (project architect), Nicholas Bewick, Junmei Liu, Emanuele Novembre, Guido Tarantola, Mayya Sargsyan of AMDL CIRCLE in Milan, Italy
    • Although this Memorial project was born out of the importance of respecting and honoring those that served during the Cold War period, we also see its relevance as a heroic symbol towards our continually evolving universe and the existence of human life.

For this reason, we have chosen not only the metaphor of infinity, by evoking the ‘Moebius Loop or Orbit’ in our design concept, but also to create an experience and place from which to think about our complex global interrelationships, in the hope that they can find a harmony that links every single person and preserves the physical environment in which we all live.

  • THE CONFLICT – Mai Abu-Shanab and Jalal  Al-Sadi of  m+j architect studio atelier in Amman, Jordan
    • This cold war memorial is intended to honor individuals and groups and give a permanent recognition to accomplishments, as quietly made, by countless individuals and groups as they pursued the expansion of freedom and democracy, creating a place for reflection and remembrance, inspiring the public to perceive freedom for centuries to come.
  • ORBITS OF TIME – Jenny Wu and Dwayne Oyler of Oyler Wu Collaborative in Los Angeles, California, USA
    • The proposed design envisions a memorial that embodies the ideals and mission of Memorial Park, making more tactile a context that can’t be measured in a single name or event: only in glimpses of history. Within these glimpses is layered a timeline of both personal and collective experiences emblematic of the Cold War – a paradigm that rebalances the interconnected narratives of American innovation and service.
  • ETERNAL CIRCULATION – Shinsaku Munemoto of Shinsaku Munemoto & Associates, Architects in Kyoto, Japan
    • This memorial intends to preserve the memories, records, and achievements of the veterans in perpetuity. By uncovering the layer of land, one space separates into two. The space of the “past” underneath meets the layers of the veterans’ work and time, where one can relive the veterans’ history and memories of the Cold War. The satellite dish formed above forges the “present” space to transmit the histories and memories. Through the hole opened in the unfolded land, the archive is seen, bridging the “past” records to the “present,” creating an ETERNAL CIRCULATION of education and communication.

“We were impressed by the number of inspiring design submissions that were received,” states Donald J. Stastny, FAIA, FAICP, FCIP, Competition Manager. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but we are very confident in the four finalists chosen to move forward. Their conceptual designs best embraced the mission and vision of the Memorial, and we can see them serve as an attraction for visitors.”

The Cold War Veterans Memorial’s guiding vision is to create permanent recognition that stimulates ongoing thought and study that honors American military members and civilians who served and sacrificed during the Cold War era (1945-1991). In line with the Pritzker Military Museum & Library’s mission, the Cold War Veterans Memorial aims to increase the public understanding of military history.

Stage II

In Stage II, the four groups of selected finalists will evolve their concepts for the Memorial and create more fully defined design concepts by late February 2022. Procedures in this stage include a virtual competition briefing, Q&A, mid-course review, and design exhibit.

The Competition Leadership Group will conduct an individual review of each design submittal and provide an advisory report of its findings to the Jury. The Jury will analyze each design and determine whether the integrity of the design concept embodied in the Stage I entry has been maintained in the Stage II design submittal and how it addresses the mission, vision, and design goals for the Memorial. The winning design will be announced publicly in March 2022.

View the finalists’ submissions here. All information on the design competition, including the design manual, Jury process, regulations, and schedule, can be found at coldwarveteransmemorial.org.

Pritzker Archives & Memorial Park Center

The PAMPC was created out of a need for additional space to house some of the circulating book collection and the archival collections of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and will be completed in phases over an estimated ten years.

The first phase of the project will include the Pritzker Military Archives Center to house the collections and provide workspace for the continued curation for future exhibits; Commercial Archives based on demand where private collectors, public institutions, and others may store their archives; a facility specializing in firearms education and training; a Community Green Space expertly landscaped with walking and biking paths; and the Cold War Veterans Memorial.

About the Cold War Veterans Memorial

In line with the Pritzker Military Museum & Library’s mission, the Cold War Veterans Memorial aims to increase the public understanding of military history. It will be a lasting tribute to the courage and tenacity found in the U.S. Armed Forces and civilian personnel who faithfully and honorably served during the Cold War era, September 2, 1945, to December 26, 1991. The Memorial will be a publicly accessible display where citizens can honor, reflect, and learn about the bravery and sacrifice displayed to further our country’s freedom. • A star-studded cast from the esports world: gaming legends from four elite esports clubs dabbled in competitive crypto trading

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 21 September 2021 – The 2021 edition of the World Series of Trading (WSOT) ended on a high note on Friday. The world’s best crypto traders can now kick back and relax after 20 intensive days of trading, having divided up a record prize pool at $4.09 million.

This year’s trading super stars also include winners by individual P&Ls: HeresJonny (P&L: 7,265.94%), chinesebirdman (P&L: 4,599.74%) and CHANS (P&L: 4,249.09%).

Powered by Bybit, the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading event attracted more than 34,738 sign-ups this year, up 280.86% from last year. Team players from 136 eligible regions formed or joined 196 troops in the main event, with 19,592 independent traders opting to play solo in the individual competition.

WSOT 2021 has captivated crypto lovers worldwide this year with the sheer size of its prize pool of USDT and NFTs. The event has also extended its reach to another community with a group of special guests: A-list esports athletes.

Young people across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region trust in themselves to lead the change towards a sustainable future

BANGKOK, Sept. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Young people are not only willing to drastically change their lifestyle in order to save the planet. They also see themselves as sustainable advocates and leaders towards a more sustainable future, according to a new global study from Electrolux revealing the thoughts of almost 14,000 young people around the world including Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APAC & MEA) region.

Young people across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region trust in themselves to lead the change towards a sustainable future

As part of Electrolux vision and bold 2030 targets for a better and more sustainable living, the company has conducted a large study set out to examine young people’s views on sustainable living now and in the future. The study finds 4,532 young people across APAC & MEA mainly trust in themselves (30%), scientists (21%), and influencers (21%) to lead the change towards a sustainable future, while only one out of ten believe adults will take on the responsibility. Majority (49%) also believe young people will actually solve the climate crisis.

Based on the results from the study, Electrolux has invited young people to work together with the company’s Innovation hub, a dedicated research and design team with a mission to accelerate sustainable change, and some of the most influential change-makers of today to explore possible solutions for better living. Insights from the survey and the sessions with the change-maker team will then be used by Electrolux in its strive to create new innovations.

The study shows that young people in Vietnam, Thailand, Australia and Israel highlight different challenges depending on where they live, but they share a belief in the benefits of technology and renewable energy. They also have a higher concern (39%) towards pandemics and (38%) air pollution. Nearly half (45%) limit their consumption of plastics. Many of them want a more comfortable life, while have less anxiety towards global sustainability threats in general.

The keys to sustainable living – according to APAC & MEA youth

Education about sustainability issues (72%) and green innovations (71%) are stated as the most important solutions in order to transition to a more sustainable society, according to the study. When it comes to their future homes, young people focus on sustainable solutions for food, water, and energy, which is more important to them than smart features without a clear sustainability aspect.

Young people across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region trust in themselves to lead the change towards a sustainable future

They are also willing to invest time and energy in food, and would prefer to produce their own food and spend time on plant-based cooking rather than having time-efficient solutions like ready-to-eat meals or not cooking at all.

We believe there’s a big opportunity in combining different perspectives in order to shape a better future. That’s why we want to involve young minds already today, as the actions we take today will define the future. As the study shows, young people have a very determinant and proactive mindset when it comes to sustainability, it’s their future at stake and they want to be part, or actually take lead, in creating solutions“, says Tove Chevalley, Director at Electrolux Innovation Hub.

About the 2030 targets

The study is part of realizing Electrolux vision and bold 2030 targets for a better and more sustainable living. Focusing on better eating, better garment care, better home environment, and better company, the targets widen the scope of Electrolux commitment to sustainability. It enables the company to contribute in a more meaningful way in bringing solutions to global challenges.

APAC & MEA selected findings:

The future of food and cooking

The most important things young people want to do in their future home is to produce their own food (30%), cook tasty plant-based food (30%) and compost or recycle all food waste (34%) and cook tasty plant-based food (29%). Only 14% want to eat ready meals instead of cooking themselves, 13% believe they will eat lab produced meat, 9% that they will eat protein based on insects and only 11% believe they won’t have to cook at all in the future.

The future of clothes and clothing care

In terms of future sustainable clothing habits, young people most commonly pointed to investing in high-quality clothes (65%) and taking care of and repairing their clothes to make them last longer (61%). 29% believe they will be wearing virtual clothes by 2030 and 28% sees renting their clothes would be a sustainable behavior practiced in 2030.

The future of well-being at home

When it comes to young people’s view well-being at their future home, they see smart systems mainly as a tool to provide advice and support in their daily lives. They want it to give health advice (35%), dietary advice (34%), exercise routines (33%), as well as guidelines and recommendations for a sustainable life (32%). They also see its role in protecting from outside toxins (36%).

About the study

The study was conducted by analysis firm United Minds on behalf of Electrolux, including a quantitative survey as well as in-depth interviews. The quantitative digital survey was conducted amongst 15–20-year-olds in 13 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Germany, Israel, Poland, Sweden, Thailand, UK, USA, Vietnam) including 1000 respondents in each market (a total of 13 886 respondents). Respondents were provided by the survey panelists provider CINT. 17 in depth-interviews were performed amongst 15–20-year-olds including all 13 markets. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Honors Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Former Executive Director of UN Women, With 2021 Global Goalkeeper Award

Foundation also recognizes three additional Goalkeepers Global Goals award winners who are taking action to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals

SEATTLE, Sept. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former United Nations under-secretary-general and executive director of UN Women, as the winner of the 2021 Global Goalkeeper Award. As part of its annual Goalkeepers campaign, the foundation also announced the winners of three additional Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards.

“By shining a light on the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women and girls, former Under-Secretary-General Mlambo-Ngcuka has ensured that global and local efforts to battle COVID-19 must take into account the acute disparities they face,” said Melinda French Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “She exemplifies the leadership we need in the fight for gender equality around the world.”

The 2021 Global Goalkeeper Award recognizes a leader who has driven progress on a global scale toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s award is being presented to Mlambo-Ngcuka for her unwavering global leadership on gender equality and continued advocacy to address the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women and girls. Mlambo-Ngcuka, a former deputy president of South Africa, has dedicated her life to advancing social justice and working with civil society organizations. During her tenure as executive director of UN Women, she led work to strengthen and expand partnerships with government, male allies, and the media, all in service of advancing SDG 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Mlambo-Ngcuka played a vital role in helping to spearhead and deliver the Generation Equality Forum in July 2021, which helped mobilize more than $40 billion in commitments from member states, the private sector, philanthropies, and civil society to drive transformative change for women and girls around the world.

This year’s three additional Goalkeepers Global Goals awards were given to Fairooz Faizah Beether of Bangladesh, Jenifer Colpas of Colombia, and Satta Sheriff of Liberia. Each awardee was recognized for their work supporting the Global Goals in their local communities.

The 2021 Changemaker Award, which celebrates an individual who has inspired change using personal experience or from a position of leadership, recognizes Fairooz Faizah Beether of Bangladesh for her work promoting good health and well-being (SDG 3). Beether is the co-founder of the Moner School, an online platform that aims to raise awareness around mental health and ensure equal access to mental health care across the country.

The 2021 Progress Award, which celebrates an individual who supports progress via a science, technology, digital, or business initiative, recognizes Jenifer Colpas of Colombia for her work to improve access to clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). Colpas is the co-founder and executive director of Tierra Grata, a social enterprise that develops low-cost, easy-to-install solutions providing access to clean energy, safe water, and sanitation services to rural communities in Colombia.

The 2021 Campaign Award, which celebrates a campaign that has raised awareness or built a community by inspiring action and creating change, recognizes Satta Sheriff of Liberia for her work to promote gender equality (SDG 5). Sheriff is the founder and executive director of Action for Justice and Human Rights (AJHR), a youth-led NGO founded to advocate and ensure access to justice and respect for human rights in Liberia, focusing particularly on helping women and girls.

“Disparities everywhere continue to worsen due to the impacts of COVID-19,” said Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “This year, we are especially honored to recognize four leaders whose work demonstrates that progress is possible, even in the most difficult of times.”

“These award winners show how women are leading the way in coming up with the innovative solutions needed to rebuild our communities and nations,” said Mark Suzman, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “This year’s winners continue to inspire us as they work tirelessly to create a more equal, resilient, and compassionate world.”

The announcement of the Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards winners follows last week’s release of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s fifth annual Goalkeepers Report. This year’s report, co-authored by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, shows that disparities caused by COVID-19 remain stark, and those who have been hardest hit by the pandemic will be the slowest to recover. Fortunately, amidst the challenges of the past year, the world stepped up to avert some of the worst-case scenarios. In the report, the co-chairs highlight the “breathtaking innovation” that was only possible because of global collaboration, commitment, and investments over decades. They acknowledge that averting the worst-case scenarios is commendable, yet they note it’s not enough. To ensure a truly equitable recovery from the pandemic, they call for long-term investments in health and economies—like the ones that led to the rapid development of the COVID-19 vaccine—to propel recovery efforts and get the world back on track to meet the Global Goals.
