FM receives EU Mideast peace envoy

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, on Monday discussed with European Union Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process, Sven Koopmans, efforts to maintain calm in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories and find a “political horizon” to bring about a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, and in accordance with the international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.

During a meeting with the envoy, Safadi reiterated that there is no alternative to the two-state solution, which embodies the setting up of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital that lives in peace and security alongside Israel as the path to solve the conflict and realize a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.

Safadi and Koopmans also discussed support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), commending EU aid to the agency.

Safadi also underscored the importance of the European Union’s role in finding “real political horizons” to achieve peace and support the Palestinian economy.

The EU envoy commended Jordan’s efforts to maintain calm and safeguard prospects of achieving a just peace, pledging to continue cooperation with the Kingdom to restore momentum to the peace process.
