Health ministry, WHO, UNICEF Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week

The Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and UNICEF on Sunday marked the beginning of the World Breastfeeding Week.

This year’s theme is ‘Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility’, reinforcing the importance of collective efforts to promote and protect breastfeeding for every child.

“The Ministry of Health of Jordan through the Primary Healthcare Administration is committed to promoting breast feeding as a best start in life for every newborn,” said Dr. Ghazi Sharkas, Assistant Secretary-General for Primary Health Care.

This year, the world is marking the 40th anniversary of the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. The code is a landmark policy framework aimed to effectively manage the sale of breast milk substitutes and avoid the negative impact on the rates of breastfeeding, which undermines the health and nutrition of Jordan’s youngest population.

In Jordan, while more than 9 out of 10 children were breastfed at some point in their young lives, only 26 percent of children were exclusively breastfed (fed nothing but breastmilk) during the first six months of life. This rate in Jordan is much lower than the regional average of 34 percent.

“This year’s celebration of World Breastfeeding Week is a stark reminder to the importance of breastfeeding, which provides high quality nutrients and energy for newborns, infants and children under the age of two years,” said Tanya Chapuisat, Representative, UNICEF Jordan. “To reach the sustainable development goals by 2030, UNICEF will continue to support the Ministry of Health in promoting and protecting breastfeeding practices, and overall child nutrition.”

Breastfeeding is the best food for newborns and infants. Research has shown that adolescents and adults, who were breastfed are less likely to be overweight or obese, and demonstrate improved IQ test results. Studies have proved that breastfeeding is good for mothers as well as for children. It not only reduces the risk of postpartum depression and diabetes, but also lowers risk of breast and ovarian cancer later in life.

“Today is an opportunity to highlight the progress made in promoting and supporting breastfeeding for its the incomparable benefits as a best start in life for every child,” said Dr Jamela Al-Raiby, Acting Representative, World Health Organization, Jordan. “Yet, to lay emphasis on protecting breastfeeding and the need for more collective work to be accomplished.”

Thanks to the generous contributions from US Department Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and USAID. With their support, and under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, UNICEF in cooperation with WHO is implementing the national breast-feeding interventions as part of the overall maternal and child health programme.

Mexico sees Jordan a gateway to Mideast, says ambassador

Mexican ambassador in Amman Roberto Rodriguez Hernandez on Sunday said that his country views Jordan as a stable country that can serve as a gateway for Mexico to access the Middle East region.

He told a press conference that Mexico chiefly aims to become as a bridge between Jordan and North America and with Latin America, adding that his county seeks to increase understanding with Jordan.

The ambassador spoke about Spanish language learning in Jordan and Arabic in Mexico, increasing tourist flows and promoting academic, student, technical and scientific exchanges.

“In this sense, we are promoting cooperation between Jordanian and Mexican universities,” Hernandez indicated, noting that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the embassy has promoted greater rapprochement between Mexico and Jordan, especially through cooperation between higher education institutions.

In recent months, he pointed out, “we have visited and held meetings (in person and online) with eight Jordanian and nine Mexican universities. As a result, three academic cooperation agreements have been signed, eleven are in the signing process and four more are in the negotiation process.”

Hernandez added that within the framework of this academic collaboration, activities are contemplated for the second half of 2021, such as conferences, seminars and courses, in addition to

student and academic exchanges when mobility circumstances allow.

With regard to commercial and economic cooperation, the ambassador noted a recent Memorandum of Understanding between the Jordanian Chamber of Commerce and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (COMCE) of Mexico.

He explained that the agreement will allow a greater rapprochement between Mexican and Jordanian companies that seek to invest, export and import between our countries.

Hernandez pledged that the Embassy will support business seminars, as well as facilitating ties between Mexican and Jordanian businessmen. It is also proposed that universities participate with trade missions, when mobility allows, he said.

As for tourism, the Embassy, Hernandez said, seeks to promote projects that allow the promotion of Mexico in Jordan and Jordan in Mexico. In addition, there will be the participation of universities and companies from both countries.

The Embassy remains close to the Mexican community in Jordan, which is why workshops and videos have been held where Mexican residents talk about their entrepreneurial activities during the pandemic, according to the ambassador.

Hernandez indicated that both Mexico and Jordan are countries with young populations and therefore “we need to promote greater understanding and rapprochement among young people”.

He said: “In this way, cooperation between Mexican and Jordanian universities will help strengthen ties between our peoples. One of the projects includes the construction of a robot that contains information related to Mexico and Jordan and that is installed in tourist sites in both countries. It will have the participation and collaboration of students, teachers and companies.”

He noted that the Embassy is in talks with Jordanian authorities and distributors to explore import and export options to Mexico. It also provides support to the chambers of commerce of both countries to facilitate communication and increase economic and commercial exchanges.

The ambassador said he was confident that the “seeds that we are sowing for cooperation between Mexico and Jordan will provide opportunities for both peoples and will bring mutual benefits for the full development of our countries.”
